Has anyone had any experience of getting a Motorola Razr V3 to work with an '03 bluetooth enabled car?
I've been tearing my hair out for since I upgraded from a Nokia
6310i. The phone pairs with the car and you can receive calls on
it but the phonebook takes ages to sync and freezes on the first number
most of the time, meaning you have to switch bluetooth off and back on
again while you're driving to use the phonebook. The Nokia worked
fine.
From what I've heard, the V3 works with more recent cars. I've
upgraded the phone to the latest firmware but it hasn't made any
difference. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Limited compatibility with the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible, Z4, X5, X3, 6 Series, 5 Series, 3 Series Saloon and 1 Series from production March 2005 onwards. Due to a simplified test procedure, the unimpaired operation of phones classed as having limited compatibility, cannot be guaranteed under all circumstances.

I'm sorry that I can't offer much in the way of help, but can sympathise in respect to problems with the Motorola v3.
I have the same handset on T-Mobile and it's been a bit of a nightmare... It's a good phone, but has it's problems when trying to use some of the more advanced features.
I've now gone back to a Nokia 6230 and I am experiencing no problems at all...

I beleive the Motorola Razr V3 is only really compaitble with Motorola BlueTooth Car kits. I had bluetooth installed via a Nokia B/T car kit into my MDs (he had the Razr) car and it didn't work so had to change to Motorola now perfik! I beleive it's a known problem within the mobile world....

Thanks for the responses. I have found a lot of people son US
forums aying that the V3 works fine with BMW bluetooth but they all
seem to have '04/'05 plate cars.
Gobert23, I have to agree about Nokias, I've always had them in the
past and never had that much of a problem with them, the 6310 worked in
the car no problems. I just fancied a flip phone as I was sick of
the key lock coming off in my pocket.
I'm concerned that this means that I'm going to have to upgrade the
bluetooth unit to the latest release, as it seems that there have been
something like 7 generations of unit. Likely to be  If I'd have know I would have bartered for an upgrade when I bought the car.

I work for T Mobile mate and the v3 is crap motorolas aint great at connecting to other blue tooth devices ,my advice is if you are still within your returns time get rid of it , nokias give us the least problems....Alan

We have 2 V3's and they have both paired with our 2005 330CD Sport Conv.
Nokia no longer support the correct Bluetooth implementation that BMW use and that means
the models after the 6310 will not pair with the BMW units. BMW
no longer recommend Nokia as the phones of choice for their cars.
I have kept an old 6310 chassis just in case we get problems though as
we know they work fine.
Bluetooth in general is a real problem as each equipment manufacturer
can choose which bits to implement and which versions of the supposed
standard to use. The result is a complete mess. Same as
we're now seeing with the next generation DVD standards, and may also
happen with High Definition Television (there's two standards there
too).
I had the BMW Professional phone system put in my 2005 X5 which gets
around all of this. Just have to leave a SIM card in the vehicle.

Blueetooth....today whats next???
Maufacturers are the taking the pi$$...They know where to hit us...and our wallets.
I was one of the ones who never ordered phone prep for my car wish i had....just put in your sim and voila. Then at least connection problems are minimised
Therefore, when my fone rings i have to pull over...as im a law abiding citizen...buts its such a pain !!

It seems like a right minefield.
I wasn't aware you could have a completely built in phone in an E46. Can you get duplicate SIM cards then?
My first choice has always been Nokia, if they did a slim flip phone
I'd buy it, or if they had a keylock that worked! It does seem
that there are problems pairing the new Nokias though.
Sounds like I've got to get the latest bluetooth module for the car..
not ideal, you'd have thought they'd have made them upgradeable..

The best advice i can give people who have bluetooth equipped cars is to speak to your dealer before buying your handset. They will have access to the most up to date database of current handsets and compatability. The average handset life is 90 days, and as the automotive industry is such a minute percentage of the telecomunications business they get little or no support. All testing is done by the manufacturer. The biggest influence to successful operation is the compatability between the software in the version of the ULF (the control unit for the bluetooth interface) and the software in the handset. The older the vehicle the less options there are as most of the handsets supported are long since obsolete. Find out from your dealer which phone and with what software level is compatable. If the phone salespeople tell you a different version of software will work (even if its newer) it probably won't, so don't listen to them (or not at least until you have checked with the dealer).
The other option to handset availabilty issues is to pay for an upgrade to the ULF which is quite expensive, but least you have more choices. Handsets for older versions are best sought from ebay and the like.
The coment above about Nokias now no longer being supported is untrue. The 6230 had odd software which only gave limited functionality (ie no phonebook), but the more recent 6230i and 6822 are listed as fully compatable with the right software versions

This will not however give you details of the limited compatability phones which you are best advised to ignore, if you want untroubled operation. The thing to remember here is that it may not just affect your phone, i know of cars that have issues with the radio/cd, and satnav systems, all of which are linked together. So once again, if unsure phone your dealer.
BMW will only consider warranty issues with Bluetooth on the basis of a fully compatable handset with correct s/ware version being used. Any partially compatable phones are not viewed as warranty and therefore treated as retail jobs due to the warnings available.
I hope this helps some of you.

I have got an 04 E46 with bluetooth included and my Sony Ericsson K700i works well. The only problem I experience is sometimes when you end a call it switches off the Bluetooth as well. Annoying but doesn't happen too often.

Same as other people, it's not much help but I had a Motorola and had
nothing but problems when it came to Bluetooth, they just don't seem to
have the BT section of their phones to a decent level of usablity!!
