You might have one of the following Bosch ECU numbers, commencing with "0261 200 xxx": "Bosch 150 and 179 (interchangeable as both on the same page) ....E24 635CSi 8/87 - 5/89 (211 hp) (Note: above not identified for catalytic system, automatic, or US model) " |

The ecu on my Highline was above the drivers side kick-panel, to the right. It was connected via a bracket & another 'box', which I think may have been cruise control, auto box, or abs. Hope that helps. Any other problems, ask jayson, he was the one that 'dug' mine. |

I have mentioned this to Jayson.
I'm sure he'll be happy to offer further discount if a number of the same vehicles are 'booked in' at the same time, but thats down to him - I don't have any commercial connections with chippeduk.com In all instances I'd suggest contacting him, by all means tell him how pleased 'I' am with what he's done on my 635 Highline, as well as my 5 series E34 520i. Top bloke, good service, competitive pricing. |

In situations like this we should approach any suppliers with a view to a "group buy" to optomise any available discounts????

I believe a certain horsey person is looking into this very thing
(unless I'm very much mistaken) with Jayson at chippeduk.com!

Jimbob, your ECU could well be an 0261 200 002
which is not chippable. My Alpina B9 3.5 had the same ECU and guess what - the very same unit as BMW supplied. Something like an 0261200 059 or 061 would be better, as long as they are the later type. |

Didn't mean to touch any nerves. My curiosity stems from a growing list of things I must do, and a list of things I'd like to do. I wondered if I could afford to add the chip&map to things I'd like to do, given the size of the things I must do.

Still a bit coy about how much you spent, Dave. That's what Simon wanted to know. The link to Jayson's site will show up his standard charges, true enough, but that doesn't say anything about special deals that he might be prepared to do..... |

Both our E34 & E24 are much improved & definitely worth
spending the extra on getting them to run more smoothly, in a more
optimal way in terms of engine performance - running a map that is
fettled to the specific model & country etc, rather than running a
generic map.
Jayson's the techie one, so if you need more info call him via Horsetans link. I must add that I am a converted person. I really had no reason to think this, but previously I thought of chip'ping as the 'dark side' of engine tuning & probably not worth bothering with. So now I will eulogise about the difference in feel & 'go' until the sun goes down!!!!! |

Out of curiosity: how expensive was it, and are there any repercussions for the emissions test on the MOT?

Jimbob: It seems your version of Bosch Motronic is this one: Bosch 002, ML1.1 "Bosch 002" refers to the last three digits of the Bosch reference number usually found as a sticker on the ECU casing. "ML1.1" is the Motronic version number. A fuller listing can be read HERE |

Sort of - it's Motronic version 1 but the ECU's are not
chippable. It might be possible to use a later ECU to remap but to be honest, you won't gain a lot. These were the days before emissions regulations went silly. At that age it really wants to be left alone! |

I might be being a bit thick, but has mine actually got a chip?

And so says Jimbob.
1981 635csi 81k miles. Will be fixed, but not by me. |

Thanks - interesting!
Funnily enough another member is in discussion with chippeduk.com about such a change, although I understand there are less gains to be had, any gain may be better than nothing, cost dependant of course. My 84 car is currently devoid of MOT, need to do a bit of remedial tin-worm work!! |
