Been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

Frightening is another way to put it. Came as quite a shock I can tell you.

My wife came with me for this appointment, so at least she knows what I know.

We were told that my condition is a mild form of ms, but its still not exactly something you feel comfortable about, despite reassurances of no reassurances!
It can't go away apparently, but can flare up from time to time with different symptoms.

I've been told to go about life as i have been, de-stress (LOL, work, cars, wife...etc, no chance!!) as much as I possibly can. I have NOT been told I can't drive, drink, smoke, fart etc.......!

Apparently many people have MS, but aren't necessarily aware of it.
My GP had already put two & two together from some recent issues & one going back 6 yrs.

I rang my Mum tonight & told her, as I did my bro in Ireland. They've been chasing me up ever since I had an MRI brain scan some months ago.

I havn't told my 14yr old, mainly because he'll worry & thats the last thing I want him to do.

I have been deliberating as to whether to share this info or not, but have decided on balance that I would as no harm can result. You guys are my friends after all.

That's a bum deal.  I can understand your shock and confusion.  Difficult as it might be, its important to take as many positives out of the situation as possible. 

While it could progress, you've been lucky to find out an an early stage and so far, at least, its mild.  This gives you the opportunity to plan for it and to prioritize the things in your life and concentrate on the important ones and the opportunity to not waste time on the unimportant ones.  You've obviously got a family around you that you are close with and who will want to help where possible.  Take it when you need it.

Look on it as something you have to live with rather than as a limitation.  Plan for how to get the most out of the life you have.

As regards your 14yr old, I can only relay a personal experience.  A good number of years back my mother had a serious, near terminal, brain tumour.  Because of some inconsequential exams I was doing, she and my family decided not to tell me.  I figured out there was something significant amiss but went through a lot of upset on the way to the conclusion.  It was unnecessary and defeated the object of the exercise in not telling me.  She had surgery and is still doing fine today.

Obviously you need to work out a clear message for your child if you are going to give it but make it one that is realistic about how things could progress, on the downside, as well as positive about the upside.  Keeping it from him or her would be a mistake, for both of you, I think.

I'm a firm believer in the power of positive thinking.  It may not overcome all obstacles or fix things, but it does mean that you get the most out of the good things that your life has yet to deliver.  Despite your news, your life hasn't been and won't be a practice run so you owe it to yourself and those around you to make and get the most out of it.

I'm sure I can speak for the forum members in saying that our thoughts are with you!
