E34 Fuel guage probs

   Guys,
When the petrol guage gets down to 1/4 tank, it goes suddenly down to red line and the reserve light comes on, then will go up slightly and light may go off but more often than not stays on. Do you think I'd be better to replace sender unit or check wiring
