Hello all

I am considering buying a 1973 BMW 3.0si.
(Infact it's advertised here on the BMW Car Club site...  White 3.0Si)

I notice the forums here seem to be oriented towards more modern BMWs, but I have a couple of questions regarding this vehicle which hopefully someone can help me with!

If anyone knows about this model and is willing to email me regarding it I would greatly appreciate it.

drewhartshea@hotmail.com

Many thanks.

Drew

(I didn't know which forum to post this in.  Hope it's alright here?)

Might be better on the 7 series forum as the e3 was the forerunner of the e23 (the original 7).

Have copied it to the 7 Register Chairman; Andrew Gilbert, and i'm sure he will email a reply soon.

If the car is genuine has 12 months MOT and you like it, then the price is reasonable IMO. Bear in mind that you can buy a e32 or e38 7 (1987 - 2000) starting at less than £1K for an e32 - buyer beware of course. But if you want to drive something a 'bit different', then this car looks fine.

Eta.  I'm quite keen to get something from the early seventies, either an E3 or a 2002 or similar.  The E9 I suspect is out of my price range really.

Dax.

I'm mainly looking for advice on the cost of welding some rust in the bulkhead behind the glove box.

I don't really want to buy the car and then find out that what looks like a small things is actually a huge issue.

I know it's common for E3/E9s to rust through at this point but I was wondering how easy it is to fix and roughly what people thought it might cost.

The damage is a hole of about 6x4cm across in the vertical plate directly behind the glove box.  It seems to have been caused by the drainage pipes above becoming horribley blocked with leaves and other gunk.  Doesn't seem to have spread elsewhere yet.

Another point is that the seal on the windscreen has gone and appears to be leaking slightly.  Any thoughts on the cost of dealing with that?

Many thanks

Drew

Drew, the cost of welding repair is difficult to advise on, but find the best tin man in your area, and dont skimp on that part.

Behind the glove box is always the place to look but make sure it has'nt spread to the A,B or C Posts, the shock Towers or the actual chassis.

Fastest way to asses that is to get the seller to allow you to jack the car up, it's likely you will hear a slight crackling sound coming from the Door sills, That's replaceable, expensive, but soluble. The real test is jacking it up under the Ladder Frame. If you dont get the cracking, sound you might have found a good one, bodywise.

Next test is the back and front of the wheel arches, if the seller isnt looking a small  brad awl is very useful. But please dont turn it into  Cheese!

The E3's are getting scarce and window seals and glassware are becoming a problem.Depending on th size of the leak some rubber compound (non-hardening) may well solve it but give Jaymic a call.

Mechanically, the M30 motor is a good one, but the early heads are prone to cracking, again , the later heads of the pre-motronic 635's and E12 535's are stronger and fit perfectly tho you have to install a

new fuel pump  The little Facit type out of the early Mini's works perfectly .

Rocker arms are a perennial noisy problem unless the later oil feed bolt has been fitted.

Had a look at the one for sale in the  section and it looks pretty good, question only about servicing and wether it has slept outside.

Whatever you get, please, please avoid any pressure wash , car wash and accept that one of the costs of owning one of these or an E9 is handwashing and drying it, and if you want to maintain marital bliss buy your car it's own biiig hairdryer to dry the nooks and crannies

Regards

Dax

Many thanks for the advice chaps, and thanks also to Andrew who emailed me regarding it.

I've just agreed to buy the vehicle, hoping to sort out to have the car trailered up some time soon.

Now where's do I sign up for the club?  :)
