My 318 E46 has developed a whining noise in the cold mornings, doesnt effect performance, just anoying, the noise stops after 1 or 2 mins driving - reminds me of the noise a faulty power steering pump would make but i dont htink this is the cause? any ideas anyone?

Always tricky with noises Xabi as you don't say where the noise appears to be coming from but I had a similar situation on my old Audi Coupe. It drove me mad until I realised it was the bearings in the fan heater that whined and squeaked for a couple of minutes first thing in the morning and then went quiet - worth a look (listen)?

belts?

belt tensioner?

alternator bearings?

whines usually dont completely go away, they just quieten enough not to be heard over regular engine noise - get a stethoscope and give a listen to alternator and belt tensioner and anything else you can contact while the engine is running without hurting yourself!!

Mine does this a small bit from time to time... I'll get worried when it doesnt go away after a minute or so.

Yeah, could be anything... I had one recently which ended up being the belt tensioner, which eventually failed.  I'd get it checked out cos it'll only get worse and could end up with a breakdown (worst case scenario)

Will..
