Thanks for all the info Dave..

I hear what your saying re: the service history.. incidently I actually bought this 740 without any V5.. documentation or service history !! crazy or what.. it just looked a genuine car.. fortunately investigations have proven me correct and the DVLA have even recognised me as being the new owner ?

I have always owned cars with big engines v12's v8's.. like a lot of you on this forum I'm a petrolhead ... besides which i'm in the business of discovering hydrocarbons so basically i'm keeping myself in employment!.. arguably.. and if the 740 is this good then the 750 has to be even better plus I just love car gadgets

However I take note.. I won't buy again without a full service history and this forum is the ideal place for any assistance as I'm finding out so really it's a 750i or 750iL and anything between 100k and 200k miles

Really do appreciate the help.. looks like it's back to the ads..

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, glad you like the 740i, which will be an E38 by the way.

Re the 750i, there are 2 versions avail in Europe, the normal one and a long wheelbase alternative. Both cars are incredibly highly spec'd but with regard to high mileage cars 100 k is nothing !!!

I've heard of 7 series car with 3 and 400,000 miles and running perfectly.

As always, service history is ABSOLUTELY imperative. Initial purchase price is NOT the key facture here, it's the cost of keeping the car in perfect condition that matters. You can save £1000 on initial purchase that can be spent in an instant at a BM garage.

Incidently, even though it goes against my normal habit, I would suggest that you have your cars BM dealer serviced, but make sure you aquaint yourself (via forums like this one) with known issues - in case you need to argue the toss/discuss matters with the service manager !!

Just as a matter of interest, why a 750? They are SIGNIFICANTLY more juicy on petrol. If you feel the 740i 4ltr is not powerful enough, then try a 4.4 ltr version. Although you should remember that you are talking about cars which weigh something like 2 tons, so they don't really get into their stride until perhaps 80-100 mph. They are not small lightweight sports cars.

Hope that helps, mail me direct if you want anything else.

Dave

Found a great open air bar overlooking an upmarket marina where they serve terrific rum punches and pina' coladas sadly I have had to leave it all behind in search of hydrocarbons!! at least it will still be there when I return.. sorry you had to work over Xmas too being in Japan

Anyway thanks for the info.. and i'll chase it up when I get back .. I know it's only a small thing but I always need to have a vehicle as perfect as I can get it .. sad I know.. but they do have a lot of salvage yards around the Manchester area so I'll take a look

Never owned a BMW before and I am very impressed... it's a massive amount of car for the money and my wife just loves it.. but I have now found myself scouring the Autotrader online for a 750 ... petrol prices aside the power sounds more like what I am used to with gadgets galore however every one I look at has well over 100k on the clock ... any advice or comments .. ??

Cheers Malcolm

Oh well, Trinidad over X-mas sounds not bad, even if you have to work. We also have to work over X-mas in Japan, as no national holiday.

Try first the usual salvage yards, maybe you are lucky to find one which is alright. Do NOT try to repair the old one with sprays and all the other stuff, do NOT touch it. If you find another one, I could give you an address in Germany of someone who has specialized on that and even has applied for a patent now. He is the only one I know where the repair works long time. Oldest ones he repaired are now already 3 years old. Look on www.7-forum.com and do a search for M8-Enzo, there you can read a lot about the 'pixel-killer'.

If any problem with German language, I believe there is a English version also when you register and log in. Or use altavista.babelfish for translation.

Apologies for not replying quicker but have ended up in Trinidad working over Xmas and new year

You sound like you have an interesting background... thanks for the information and will chase it up once I am back in Blighty on leave and have time and access to my own machine

Have a good Xmas

No, U.S. might be the wrong place for you to buy one. They have LHD and probably the part is or might be different in shape. Am not sure about that. Look into the Ebay offers and check the dealers with used parts. Maybe you find a good one from a car which had an accident.

Also the design probably depends on the production year. As usual for all models, many parts are changed in design by production years and facelift.

I am not that familiar with the E38 as I have an E32 and I do not live in the U.K. but in Japan. Maybe someone from the U.K. can give some advice where to check for used parts. Use the online parts catalog to find your correct part # http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?PHPSESSID=2f576ced29477 680ec938848d4d39ea1

Good source for info is here as there are many E38 owners

Yeah just found out it's an E38 .. not had it long.. but very impressed with it

From what you say I guess it would be a waste of time buying from a salvage yard then? even if I could find one it would probably be U/S

So will take a look at the weblinks ... thanks very much for the info

I assume you have an E38. 1994 was just the year when the model was changed from E32 to E38. Unfortunately that pixel problem on the E38 is known. There are many tips how to repair it, but most of them fail. Maybe best is you get a used one. I only know one person in Germany which repairs them very cheap and his first repaired ones now run for >2 years without a problem. He has applied for a patent.

Here a link from bimmerboard

http://www.vdorepair.com/   and how that is discussed in USA

Can anyone help .. Car is a 1994 740i and superb but...

The little red dots which make up the temperature LED readouts on both Driver and Passenger sides of the car are starting to fail so that when you adjust the temperature the numbers are now missing the tiny red LED dots and you can't tell what the new temperature is you have just selected and it's doing my head in

Is this an expensive repair or can it be a DIY which I would prefer and would it be an easy or difficult job??

Last but not least..

The Outside Temperature readout in the dash is in degrees F whilst the A/C Temperature readout is in degrees C is it possible to change the External to degrees C also  or vice versa..?? seems odd to have them reading differently...
