Topic: Main Dealer servicing Posted: 14-December-2005 at 06:06 |
Hi,
Last night my hand brake went very loose on me - takes about 12 clicks to start holding the car but isnt good enough to hold it. I haver it booked into main dealer tomorrow, has anyone ideas what this may cost me?

It could be just the cables or more likely the adjusting mechanisms. As for price - how long is a piece of string? Dealer rates are quite high as are their parts. What car is it?

Its an E46 318i '00 - Suppose i better own up as to what i did. I remeber reading in the manula that it would do no harm to apply the handbrake slightly while coasting to a stop to clear drums etc. So, as im up for NCT i decided to give it a go, 20 mph, apply clutch, pull handbrake, car starts to slow, handbrake starts to rise, stupid of me i know.

That should have been fine... years of pulling handbrakers in my old 306 *shudder* never severly loosened it as you describe.
The handbrakes in more modern bmws should easily be able to withstand the mild application you performed - there are some here who've been known to go a weee bit further - you know who you are - pesky drifters ;)...
It should be easily adjustable, (open to correction) carefully remove the handbrake gaitor from its mount and if there is 2 bolts on threaded bars tighten them in a few mm and see if that makes a difference.

Avoid a main dealer if it's not too late. CAncel the appointment. Any garage can sort that for you at half the price.

Probably cable stretch - you should be able to feel any imbalance by repeating the procedure you 1st tried!!! Although I can understand if you're reluctant to repeat that.

You probably killed the handbrake shoes - not expensive to replace.
Give Alan a call in AC Car Sales on 4531433 and he'll sort you out.
