hi

im new to the forum as only just acquired a 1989 635csi auto. i would like to replace the speakers but have heard that unless you buther the panels about a bit it could be tricky. is this true? would anyone happen to know what size speakers would fit easily into the car without the need for cutting the panels?

many thanks in advance for any help/suggestions people!

Take a look at www.bigcoupe.com for some links & info.

In short, you can get 6 x 9 speakers in the rear pods but the front are limited to 6 x 4's & improving those will only send better sound to your ankles.

You can fit tweeters to the small triangle which backs onto the mirror base.

If you have an '89 then it'll be a Highline which means leather door panels & I wouldn't want to butcher those.

You're never going to get great sound but you should be able to get something reasonable with a decent head unit.

Most 6ers have mounts for 6x4 speakers in the rear pods as well; only later cars had larger mountings in the back IIRC.

Since a PO had already cut it for 6" units, I recently upgraded the speakers fitted to the kick panel below the rear seat to 6x9s- pretty good......

This is about the least invasive part to start cutting about as the carpet here is a small separate part anyway, and the panel here doesn't need much strength.

If you fit larger speakers in the rear pods they will usually sound poor unless they are sealed in and a port is cut through into the boot to create an 'infinite baffle' arrangement- I didn't want to do this....

cheers
