Mark,

Is it a 316i or 316 with carb - if injection then should be near the tank, otherwise I would have thought it would be in the engine bay. I used to have a 316 and can't remember where it is but I do have a haynes manual at home so I'll have a look

Paul

Your fuel pump will be under the rear seat on the drivers side, it's hidden underneath a black access panel.

Easy to replace, de-pressurise the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse (number 11) until the engine dies on it's own, and remove the fuel cap, lift rear seat bench, and remove sound deadning, remove 4 screws and remove the access panel, undo the 4 nuts that hold the level sensor in, unplug it and pull it out, remove the connector for the pump, undo fuel line, and with a flat blade screwdriver in the cutouts on the pump, twist it until it comes undone, and twist the pump up and out of the hole in the tank.
