I am looking at one of these at the moment and wondered if anyone has any words of wisdom on running one of these cars at this type of mileage. Costs? Likely failures? etc...

It would be a second car and kept garaged.

TIA,

Duncan

Hey Toby

'cos the car I've got my eye on is shiny and nice. It also has full BMWSH and an AUC warranty.

So come on then... who's running higher mileage 3.0l M3s?

Mine's got 97k on it. Bulletproof. Gearbox is solid. Just replaced the suspension and brakes as they were a bit tired.

I use it daily, work is a 30 mile round trip, which equates to around £40 per week in fuel with all my personal included.

Insurance isn't bad... and I'm only 24.

Anything specific you want to know?

I know a guy who does callout service work and inspecII costs under £300. A local indy does them at £320, and the local stealer wanted £800!

Plenty of spares due to the space cadet test pilots who buy them and smash them.

Bought it for way under market value, could probably resell it for more....Don't regret not buying an evo for 1 second. (especially reading SteveB's experience... he seemed to buy an SMG evo at the same time I got mine. (I was looking at SMG evos) I saw the manual 3.0... drove it, loved it, & took a bag of cash around to his house.

Hey Dunc, my E36 has over 100k on it.  Renewed pads last year but that's usual wear n tear. Sailed through mot last month.

Had to replace a few ignition coils after a spark plug worked loose and caused upset.  Apparently you need to tighten spark plugs up now and again as they were quite common for loosening off, although BMW took nothing to do with it.

Missus uses it daily for work now and complaining about fuel usage but she works only a few miles away so the car is probably on cold start all the time.

Alan.

Mines on 103K now and is running fine,(put out 288bhp on the r/r last july with just a panel filter) apart from consumables so far everything is fine,  famous last words ! Had all the brakes replaced before i bought it,  and i gave the suspension a bit of a freshen up. Best car i've ever had.

I recently purchased a '94 E36 M3 with 94k on the clock. Car has loads of main dealer history and a couple of indy's lately.

It needed rear brakes and an Inspection 1 after I bought it showed up no nasty surprises apart from a wheel alignment.

It runs like a watch and goes like a rocket.

If you are looking at a full history car with a warranty to use as a second car, you can hardly go wrong.

Go on just do it, you know you want to.

Mine's got 108k miles, 40k of which I've done.

I've had to replace a couple of sets of pads and tyres, one battery, plus the rear shocks, springs and bushes (common problem). I've also now got signs of rust on both rear arches, but that's to be expected with an 11 year old UK car.

Apart from that she's run like a dream for 3 years with regular indy servicing.

When I first got her I was doing 100+ miles a day and now only do about 30, but never misses a beat.

Also done a couple trackdays in standard trim. Not ideal for trackday in standard trim as the brakes aren't up to it, but fun can still be had.

All in all a good bullet proof everday car that with regular servicing should see 250k+ easilly.
Drive it like you stole it!

Thanks for the info troops. All pretty positive which is nice to hear. Bit more phoning around regarding loans / insurance / etc. today and then some more banter with the current owner I think...

Well I seem to be winning with 135K (35K of which I've done myself). Everything that has gone wrong with mine in the last 4 years is to do with suspension - front and rear shocks, bushes, arms etc. Other than that it's been great!

Mine has 121k on the clock, it has been chipped and runs a Scorpion cat back exhaust, gets the oil changed regularly. Looked after by a specialist. No Vanos problems on the 3.0.

It will be at the Nurburgring again this year, other than the normal bushes/discs etc and a bit of rust developing in the usual areas, the engine has been faultless. Gets driven hard everywhere! Tried the new Tesco 99 Octane Super Unleaded the other week after only using Optimax previously, found it better!
