Hi, I need a bit of welcome advice.

I am looking at buying my first BMW.  Its a 2000 E38.  There is a tapping noise coming from the front left part of the engine when idle.  It is not VERY loud but noticeable.

Garage reckon this is not an issue.  Any ideas for a new soon to be owner?

The 4.4's are crap, just nothing but trouble. Best one
is an early 4 litre that's had the Nikasil block
changed for a later one and with full history but
they're getting on a bit now.
735i's were a bit better (not so prone to head
gaskets) but really the M62 V8 can be a can of
worms. Avoid anything making an engine noise!

If it's got enough 'go', look for a 728i. They go quite
well and the engine is very good. Also the 5.4 V12
M73 which is a really good strong engine with
massive performance. MPG isn't that bad if you go
easy on the pedal.

Thanks for the advice...but...this is the best car i've seen and i have been looking for a while.  Any ideas what this tapping noise could indicate and is it serious/repairable.

thanks!

Is it a light tapping or knocking ? 9/98-> v8's have Vanos, which will make a light knocking when running at operating temp. To the unsure , it can sound terminal !!

Thanks for your input Phil.

The sound is very soft, like a soft tapping.  The car has just been mot'ed and everything has come back ok.  The hydrocarbons etc are great which would suggest to me that the engine and cat are working ok.

The car drive amazing.
