Guys - sorry if this is cross posting as i've started a thread in the 6 series technical forum along the same vein but it was sugested that here might be better.

I am toying with an idea of a classsic and really like the E9.  Does anyone have a rough idea of values and I fully appreciate that condition will determine everything but lets assume that I want the upper end of the market so condition muct be high but not necessarliy concours.

Saw this one and think she looks well but hard to tell from the pics

Hi Martin,

The first decision you are going to have make is usage/cost

and that leads to the next, Auto or Manual.

If it's going to be a daily driver whatever you buy is going to have a limited life span.

If it's going to be a dry Weather, weekend toy then your entry level is going to be a 3.0 Csi manual ranging through CSL's up to the Batmobile.A Genuine, and I repeat Genuine bat is going to start at about 45 and range all  the way past 60K.

Please beware, there are many sharks  in this water.

( A case in point is the Canary Island Bat advertised on this forum, People whose judgement I trust  have flown there and it aint as good as advertised\)

If Fun is all you want, you can pick up Carburetted 3.0 CS's failrly cheaply,if they have had the the Auto/Manual conversion make sure a) that it was the Getrag 265 5 speed rather than the Getrag 260 Gearbox used and b)that the conversion was done by someone who knew what they were doing.

My personal opinion:

The German one is overpriced for an Automatic in a country that also suffers from Rust.

Unless it's coming out for showdays, Irish Roads are'nt conducive to Real CSL batmobile use.(Hell, none of the CS models like 100k/hour, never mind 50?)

As an often Driver, a normal CSL,with its thinner Ally is going to be an expensive repair if someone makes a mistook.

A nice 3.0 CSi (M) thats had a Good respray, preferably in it's original colour, owned by someone for at least a couple of years in the 12-15K mark and that does'nt make a crunching noise when you jack it up is going to give you  plenty of fun.

Dax - cheers for that.  The auto one while a pretty car isn't really mu cup of tea.  As for the Batmobile, a little too loud for a Sunday cruise.

I think the approriate model would be a nice clean 3.0 CSL, 5 speed manual. Emailed a few people including the one mentioned above. Quoted 45k and hence had a bit of a wobble about the values.

Ballpark price would be around 15k but would be adjustable depending on the car.

So what do you think - would a nice CSL, 5 speed be achievable on a sub 20k budget?

BM Fan, they are but you have got to be careful as often the better looking cars are the ones hiding the rot!

Unless you want the CSL for the badge or for typical fast driving on track or down country lanes, the CSi is actually a better bet than the CSL. They are a fair bit cheaper, actually rarer, and have a steel bodywork that is stronger than the alloy panels on a CSL. Much cheaper repair bills if someone else puts a dent in it. The engine pumps out the same 200 bhp and the RHD CSL versions aren't that much lighter.

5-speed gearbox is much better, but two tings to watch out for: 1. What do you want to use the car for, the sport- (or close ratio "dog-leg") gearbox is excellent for driving on track and country lanes, whereas the "overdrive" gearbox is better for cruising along the Motorways. 2. The gearbox is longer so the crossmember has to be repositioned and the propshaft shortened.

A good CSi can be had for 8-10k, a CSL up to 15k. Main concern is the bodywork, expensive to fix and some lousy restorations around. If you want a proper lightweight CSL then you have to look around for a left-hooker, but for any other E9 I would not scan the German car ads. That particular one is too expensive, besides the 17" alloys make the drive too harsh!! 16" Alpina's are just great, from an E12 or E28. As for the Canary Island one I would only touch that if the price was halved, I have seen pictures, maybe no rust on the body, but needs a lot of attention.

Thanks guys.  The car would be warehoused most of the time.  Carclub days, the odd Weekend and the odd Trackday.  Maybe even a trip to the Ring.

LHD would not be a problem and I like the CSL history.  I appreciate the alu parts being more trouble and expensive but thats still the one that I keep coming back to.

We live half time in Poland, ( go to NL on Monday)  In a couple off years we stay here for 100%, in the mean time driving between two houses.

Driving is not so bad, I have a daily runner 2003 745I, super car and last year I bought in Germany, ( from an old man, 81, really)

An 850 I in brand new condition, Granddad used it only for 36.000 km in 15 year!

 

Its fun the drive this car, it is really a sports car.

The Merc is far too precious to me for these winter months! She is only laid up temporarily. A different car but gorgeous in her own way!
