525 Engine Noise

   525 Engine Noise.
Hi Everybody
Ive got a 525ix se saloon. 
Its done 120k, and has been cherished, and serviced regularly. However just this week, I am experiencing like a high pitch whirring noise when accelerating in 2nd, or 3rd. It sometimes even sounds sort of metallic (ie metal on metal). its very subtle though. Usually the engine on this great car sounds so sweet.
I noticed also when asscending a hill the other day, when normally I could cruise it in 4th, it struggled a bit, and I had that "pinking" noise i havent heard in a car, since I had a Sierra years ago!!!
Whats going on? Has anyone got any suggestions?
