Fear it might be a nutty question but here goes: considering the cost and often poor condition of 2nd hand replacement chrome for 6er bumpers, is there any option of passable repair at manageable cost? Has anyone any experience along those lines?

-seen a 'DIY shadowline' job before now, where chromes were weld-rapaired than sprayed body colour (graphite IIRC). Not to everyones taste......

Have considered making up replacements in stainless steel (ah... think of that....), but they are a complicated shape....

cheers

Stainless would be slick. I used to work with it when building boats in Australia and it was really handsome when polished. But, yes, shape and need for flex would stretch the possibilities. I just keep looking at my front bumper chrome inserts, knowing that the small-ish rust holes in them signal a bigger problem beneath, and wondering if there has to be a better way than going on chasing better inserts all over the country! But no doubt that has been wondered so many times by now it ain't worth me saying.

I think the only way to do it is to (with bumper off) get it in the hands of a skilled metalworker, weld in pieces as required, linish off etc, then get to a good chrome-plater......
My 635's.

Plenty of precedent for this: even the NSU Ro80 had all stainless steel bumpers
