Hello Killian, I'm back lol, I sort of lost interest after my beloved 525i was written off by an uninsured chappy, but I've nearly finished its replacement now.
Before my bump I had floated the idea of a recomended page, where we could put useful contacts on, bodywork, repairs spares and the like, and of course our reasons why we recomend these people and places.
Did the idea die a death ??

Not at all - I have something like that on the Irish Region Site (with only 3 listings ath the moment)
I would be interested in developing something like this if others were agree to it.

On the design end of it - would it be like the one on the Irish site where businesses simply place their details into the database or would they have to be scrutineered beforehand and if so by whom and how can the scrutiny people verify the business.

Would it categorise businesses into dealers, parts, maintenance, other & ???

I suppose there would be the ability to search depending on business type or location. I would need a list of general UK locations for this if someone wants to complete this (15-20 I guess).

Any other ideas for this?

As I floated the idea in the first place I would be happy to try to help.
For the regions why not use counties, or the areas of the club, midlands, south east, north west etc?
As for who is listed I would suggest that we nominate people, and give our reasons why we think they should be included, I like many other people on here have answered the "where can I get this ?", "does anyone know who does this in this area ?" type of questions.
In the future we may even be able to arrange some discount on services and parts, I know one of the scrap yards that specialise in bm bits have been bowled over by the response they got just by the owners son mentioning them on here, on the other hand I have personally been very dissapointed by a scrapyard local to me who advertise in the links section of the club, who when they can actually be bothered to answer a query have never got anything. So rather than businesses just being able to list themselves, I'd favour the recomended approach.
Best Wishes

Ill make a start on it but I reckon that counties may be best (and therefore people can search by county (Ireland I guess would count as one county).

Does anyone have a list of counties in the UK (my primary school geography is long forgotten by now)?

Going the recommended route is the only option when you consider the 'buyers beware' thread elsewhere on the forum.

If possible there should also be the option for us to rate those listed as peoples experiences are subjective and sometimes the bad get better and the good get worse. It would be handy if there was a sin bin for serial offenders who are not to be recommended - assuming there aren't legal (defamation) issues.

On an associated note, what about a place where there could be links or details to the many technical articles that are out there????

I had typed a nice long reply message but Murphys Law - I lost it

anyway I reckon that it could be tricky validating all entries so I think just apply a disclaimer at the bottom of each page removing the club from any liability etc.

Businesses would be ranked by members (i vote per member using the same login details as the forum) and members could post their experiences on the company profile page

OK Derek I heard ya the first time.

Something like that would be easy to produce but again would possibly need some kind of moderation (I guess by either having new links being emailed to me/Howard/someone else) and/or by having a report bad link email facility (to prevent spam).

I've had another thought.... you can shoot me if you wish.....could we also have a postal service page on this.
One of the places I would suggest is in kettering, but they are also happy to do a postal service, so may appeal to members in other areas.
Also what does it cost to have a mention on the website ?
The three places I'm going to recomend when its up and running dont have a web site, but you never know, I may be able to talk them into paying something to advertise on the club site, the kettering one should be the easiest, he was very pleased with the response just by his son mentioning thier business on here, before it all got out of hand with that silly man from down south.
Best Wishes

Fair enough Ron, I never realised Bristol was a county, I still thought it was part of avon, but then again, I grew up in Birmingham, right by the Warwickshire cricket ground, which is still there, but ironically, it now "west midlands", was definately warwickshire when I was a lad.

Anyway it could use the club regions (with an explanation map).

I could add a postal address for people to include their business on the site. In terms of payment - I was not thinking of charging but of having members submit sites which can then be rated and reviewed by members. There could also be the possibility of having banner ads on it which would be paid for. I'll see what Howard and the other powers that be think

The places I use dont actually have sites Killian, I was thinking more of what does it cost to have a small add on the club wesite, obviously without a link to a website, just more of a mention really, hello I'm joe, I service E34 bm's or something similar, it was just a thought, the site is good for us, and its nice to know where to go for what in what area, but it could also be profitable for the people we mention, and could perhaps raise the odd copper for the club.

Yes thats the sort of thing I had in mind Killian for the "adverts", but for the people we actually recomend maybe a line or two as to why we do
