Would it be considered too snobbish to indicate you are a club member in your signature ?
Reading the experiences of the couple of chaps who fell foul of that baddie from down south it might give a bit of an indication into the character of the people your dealing with.
I'm not suggesting non club members are bad, but all the club members I've met seem to be very decent sorts.
I'm ready for all the indignant replies !!!!
And no offence meant to non club members.

I or the other moderators (can't speak for Howard) have no real way of verifying the membership details [especially if username is a pseudonym like 'Big Wheels'] and I don't know if I would place something like:-
Killian Bannon membership # 1234 as I don't really want others knowing my number.

Any ideas folks?

Could the club office provide us with a database of club members and their numbers?

If so, folk could contact mods through some online mechanism and ask for a 'member' flag to be set somewhere in the forum software. A mod only equivalent of 'Posts' or 'Location' labelled 'Member'?

Problems of course are :

Can the software cope?
How do we deal with (non-)renewals?

I would doubt it - freedom of info etc.

The only real option is to shut down the forum and reopen a closed one where members get their login details when they renew membership -> a lot of work there!

I for one would like to know who are members and who are just public.
Whats wrong with showing your membership number..it's not like it is linked to your credit card or anything..

The other forum I belong to only allows members to 'use' the forum.. the public have to make do with read only..
and they have many more members than we do..

I have nothing against Joe Public surfing our site.. it is good for the club.. but I do think that moderators or anyone with a 'voice' should really be members.. after all it is a club site.

But committees (regions, registers, etc) already get sent lists of members as they join, miss renewals, etc... The implication there being that surely the fora are logically just an extension of the club and as such are entitled to the information in order to run as required?

when you place an ad on the CC site, in order to get it free you have to put in your mem no.
If you wanted to show all and sundry you were a club member, then perhaps a seperate logo beside your name (or under it) that would only be accesible to club members. This way anybody can still use the forum, but you will know who was a member.

Surely once you have the membership details you can just modify the approach you take with assigning the status under the indivuiduals name Newbie, Groupie etc could be left for non-members and the others for members based upon the number of posts as before.

We shouldn't be looking to exclude non-members from the forum as the internet is the first place many people find out about and join the club - myself included. Non members should be able to post queries perhaps on one general access section for buying/technical advice and the like but maybe the other sections should be read only??

Looking at the layout of some of the other forums it's obvious that there is no single winning formula for this and we've got to come up with one that suits the majority of the users and promotes the club.

To insert a new field into the database and then go through it to see who are members and who aren't would be an administrative nightmare that I would rather avoid.

I agree also with Dereks thoughts about not restricting anyone form the forum - it is a good way for Joe & Mary public to see that we are a decent bunch and hopefully they will then decide to join. I think also that if you hang around long enough you would nearly be embarrased to say that you weren't a full member (£35 is not much to ask for in fairness). Furthermore non members will soon realise the disadvantages of not having memebrship - no mags, no discounts, etc.

I am just after noticing that only moderators can access the Member Title field in the edit profile page (on that note I shall reiterate that nobody can access your passwords!). The member title is a field for decorative purposes only which displays underneath your avatar (see mine to the left saying 'BMW e30...'. If you want a message there in yours email me or PM me or one of the other moderators (Duncan Ireland, Brendan Purcell or Eamon Reilly)

I can add a modification whereby members can modify their own title but i think this may be best left to the moderators - however I still have no way of verifying the details so if I insert Member Number KB1234, it is the same to me as adding BMW Rules or whatever!

I don't think you should exclude non members, but restricting certain areas to members only could be good.
(but how you do it I'm not sure). But I don't think your mem no should be shown.

may I ask, why is it that if I click on a recently read topic (bottom right corner of the forum homepage 'new forum posts') I get 'access restricted only members with sufficient permission are allowed to view this post'?

It may be that you are clicking on a topic in the Moderator's forum - you can see the headline but have no [IT] rights to view the discussion.
