Hi,

This is my first post although I've spent many hours scouring every BMW forum going recently.

I've had my 635 Highline a now but it started causing me grief after it had been stood for a week, some months ago. It's an intermittent problem so is proving hard to track down.

It starts ok and will run fine for a couple of miles (although this varies) and then starts to what I can only describe as "over fuelling", and will flood / cut out if left in Drive (it's an auto obviously).

If you drop it into neutral and rev it, it'll cough, splutter, backfire, shoot flames out the back and stuff but will limp on. Eventually, it'll cut out altogether and is impossible to start for a couple of hours.

It's been into the local BM Specialist three times. First, they couldn't find anything and it ran ok for a few weeks, then the problem came back. Second time, they said that Fuel Pressure Regulator wiring was disconnected and they fixed that. Again, it was ok for a bit then started again.

After spending many hours searching forums, I had the FPR and fuel pump relays changed and at the moment it's ok.

Anyone experienced this problem or got any ideas, just in case it returns! Arrgh!

Sounds like the cold start valve isn't closing, in effect you're running with the choke out.

The valve is controlled by the thermo-time switch. Below a certain coolant temp the switch is closed which sends power to the cold start valve, opening it when the starter is activated. When warm, the switch doesn't open & the cold start valve doesn't open. To limit valve operation a current also warms the switch & opens the circuit after a few seconds thereby closing the cold start valve.

If you need held on checking these, I can scan the relevant pages from the Bentley manual.

Ive got a 89 highline and have experienced the same problem a couple of times, it may be a coincidence but if my car has been laid up for a week or so i let it run for about half hour before i drive it, since doing this i have had no problems?

Thanks for the responses guys.

AndyS, any info you can provide would be appreciated.

The local specialist didn't seem to think that cold start valve was the likely culprit but given that they haven't cured the problem, I'd be happy to take your advise.

The cars been fine for the last few days as I've been running it every day. Roll on summer when it will see daily use.

Cheers.

Hi, I had a similar intermitent problem with over fueling when I first got my 6. It turned out to be my ECU. I got one on ebay for £10.

What fuel crisis?
