I am a bit concerned at the setup of this forum, with regards to security.

As a regular on e36coupe.com forums, I have noticed that there has been an increase in car part theft. These parts are either ending up on ebay or on someone elses car as it has been stolen to order.

Now, are we showing the wrong people how to do this by posting links on the forum pages? Wouldn't it be better if we all PM'd the individual asking for information regarding these matters. We are also divulging inocent information of where the car is, what model it is and showing photos like a shop window for thieves.

I would like to suggest that the forums be set-up so we would have to login before we can view/ access the forums.

What do you guys think?

The setup of the forum is fine - people post what they feel comfortable with.
As an example, many people post pics of their cars - some blank out the reg plates. However, the possibility of theft is one reason that I have currently abandoned the members gallery idea.
As for showing scumbags how to steal stuff from cars; they will do it anyway and most likely aren't using the internet for methods of theft. However, if a thief was to study before going out for something they could always read a Haynes, Bentley or the TIS - all of which will contain info on how to remove items from a car.
If the forum was locked to outside viewers then
a) we would lose search engine ranking (not a huge issue)
b) the thief could just register and view the details*. If the details weren't here then they could just ask and get several helpful replies.
c) solutions to most problems are all over the internet already. For us to 'hide' info because some scumbag may find it helpful is rather naive as they will more than likely find the info anyway and if they can't they will probably take the part anyway - most things are stolen on demand.

* don't ask about a totally locked forum except for club members only as it just isn't going to happen!

Ok, points taken, after reading your response I think you are right, the 'scumbags' will get what they want at all cost anyway.

Just thought I'd remind the forum viewers to be careful what they post.

How about a gallery of the scumbags ..............only kidding but Reading Police have done this before posting photos of the convicted in the busy town centre.
