E39 Heated Washer Jets

   I've noticed when I get to my car in the morning that it looks like they are already on & working.  If there is any frost on the car, there is always a dry patch around the washer jets of about 10" in diameter, like they've switched themselves on.
I thought they only worked when the car was switched on and the temp below a certain reading?  If they are on with the car off, I'd thought the battery would go flat, but it has never been the case.
ANyone else notice this?
