Can someone confirm to me that the 318ci received its newer, uprated engines boosting from 105 to 143(?) bhp in 2001?

If so, is there a sure fire way to identify the newer one over an older one?

Cheers....

The 318 saloon got the new valvetronic engine (N42) in 2000. I haven't actually seen one myself, but I suppose the easy way to tell would be the absence of a throttle body.

The first of the new shape 4 cyl coupes had 105 for sure, I thought the  new 143bhp valvetronics came out in 2001, but it seems 2000.

Excuse my ignorance Dave, what's a throttle body, and how can I find it?

It was 2001.

The newer cars have different interior trim, Tex Cloth 2000 identifies the newer engine.

The throttle body will be at the end of the accelerator pedal cable. There is no throttle cable in the valvetronic engine.
According to the TIS CD, the saloon got the valvetronic engine in 2000, coupe in 2001.
Previously the E46 318 coupe had the 8v M43 engine fitted. This engine looks much "older" than the valvetronic one.
Hope that clears it up...
