My journey to work in my 92 525i sport manual is about 2 miles through 4 sets of lights (always red) and a roundabout, I get 21 mpg.  I had to work over the holiday weekend and drove from our caravan 40 miles to work.  I averaged 31 mpg over 6 journeys (240 miles) taking it really easy on quiet country roads

I have a 97 540i Automatic which I don't seem to be able to improve on 20 mpg. (Thats about 50% Motorway, 50% Urban)

Anyone with any hints on how to improve this would be welcome

Try to gently build up speed and cruise on part throttle on A-roads & motorways. Avoid sharp acceleration out of junctions etc. Ditch any unnessary weight, or err, get the bus!

Cheers,

The extra weight really makes a differance, I carry about 350kg of tools and materials (tiles, paint etc.) in the back of my old bus and this really kills mpg, put a few peope in there as well and I'm lucky to get 20mpg.  Empty it all out and go on a run (Farnborough to Monmouth area 130 miles with just stuff for the weekend) and I see 32mpg!  Around town with an emptyish car and I still see 26mpg - load the tools back in and off it drops!

Plus the car handles so much better with less weight in the boot, responding to my pager when on call and having to get the station is a much more comfortable experiance when the tools are at home!!!
