As I am in the midst of my 73 3.0 CS resto I can so relate.

I love the old E3's too and picked up a 3.3 LA in the literal backyard of a local garage down here in Galway, alas, too far gone to restore and have stripped off that which I and other friends could use on their E3 restorations.

Such a pity!!

Man that was rotten!! Interestingly, another
Ruby/Granite red example. Jerry and Graham Lynch
have a 3.3Li each, same colour.

Those early 3.3 L Jet motors are a fine base for a
CSL engine rebuild. Might even have an LSD as well
- did you check or remove it?

Its funny you mention the E3 2500 PGN33L as I
have got that, basically for spares as the engine is
seized.

Not really. CSL's are very undervalued. I sold my
orange one for £8250 which was a very tidy and up
together example in Inca orange with all the correct
bits and matching numbers. Nigel Moseley sold his
for £15'000 which is absolutely perfect follwing a very
serious restoration. £9000 will buy a very decent
CSL - not concours but nice.

How bad is PGN 33L? I remember the ad on Ebay
and it didn't look a bad car. For the sake of dropping
an engine in (£50-100 from an old E28 525i) it would
be a pity to scrap another one. If you have the room
(a key factor!) it would be worth keeping it in once
piece. I wish now that I'd spent a month of evenings
properly rebuilding mine, ho hum.

The PGN is not too bad it would need some welding on the sills and repairs of doors and bonnet.  The wings on it are excellent which are what I need for my 3.0SI.  It is a shame to break it but the SI is a much rarer car so if I have to save one it has to be that.  Can't keep all the cars unfortunately as when I have done the E12 I will have to sell my E24.

@ Drew, LSD is fine but both my 73  and 69 E9's have LSD's The Wrecked E3 was a carbed version which suprised me as I thought all L versions were FI,Fortunately, I've kept the relevant bits ,3.3 motor, LSD,Power steering, starter motor a a host of small odds and sods,Think I commented to Sam that classic car buffs are Gannets and hoarders!!

Once I've solved all the mechanical and electrical "improvements"

inherited from PO's,had the E9 resprayed, tidied up the E24,then a E3 is on the wish list but figure thats about 2 years down the road.

Unless the proverbial widow pops up with a pristine dark Blue, tan leather 3.0 Si to get me into more hot water with the wife.

@Dave, hope you will be documenting the on going resto as well as you did for the CSl?

I will definately be documenting the E3 resto.  I have started it earlier this year with most of the welding done  but the E12 cam up so I decided to do that first as it is less involved.

Cheers

Dave

Not at all. The early ones up until 1976 were all
carburettor, only the late ones from mid '76 having
the 3210cc 633CSi engine with Bosch L Jet when
the 3.0Si also went from D to L Jetronic. Those
earlier ones were a weird engine, 3299cc which was
a 3 litre Carb engine but with a very long stroke
crank.

In Europe you could also get a 2.8L and a 3.0L, both
with carbs only.

Dave, you are a Brave man or you are addicted to the smell of Iron Oxide and welding

Wow!! Thats going to to be something, are you keeping the Goldfinger look?

the Donor 2500 actually looks good, which reminds me,you asked in an earlier email what I would be looking for re the E9, if you come across them,

RHS front bumper section, possibly a reasonable boot lid and and interior when  can afford them

Be well and happy welding

Its just a hobby, doen't seem like a proper weekend unless I get covered in oil.

I ma going to keep the E3 Goldfinger, it will be a slightly lighter colour as the original paint was.  Its also got a full length webasto roof which will be interesting to remove and repair.

I do have quite a few E9,E12 and E3 spares but at the moment they are all over the place so I don't know what I am keeping and what I am selling.  I will get round to sorting them out at some point.

Cheers

Dave
