I have A 1996 525i, I have only 1 remote control fob which was recently damaged consequently making it impossible to disable the system, the alarm system was fully operational before the control fob was damaged.

When I took it to my local dealership they say it has a fault on it, they could not fix it, and  a new system is needed at a cost approx £900, after ringing around I`m told that only a dealership can do any work on a BMW alarm system is this true? is it worth having a different system installed, any reccomendations, or is there an alternative to have the original alarm diagnosed by an independent company.

I`d like to know if anyone has had the same problem when approaching a dealership to work on bmw alarm systems.

Sounds like crap to me.Why couldn't they just replace the remote control,I got a spare for mine no problem at all from a dealer with some id and proof of ownership (or is the fault on the actual system?).From what I can tell the system is an old Sigma system(i.e. the fobs are exactly the same). If you do need a new system just have an aftermarket one fitted,Cat 1 systems are fairly cheap and nowhere near the £900 you have been quoted.

I have a Scorpion alarm system on my 1989 530i..
Dropped the FOB in some water, after which it seemed not to function.Took it along to a local IC/Systems guy who replaced the the FOB chip "FREE" but, eventually found it was the ON/OFF barrel on the alarm that was causing the problem..
your best bet would be to find an alarm repair guy.they have all the equipment.

Hi Matrix,

I bought a 5 series which has a 3t bmw alarm ,I was told be my local bmw garage. because i never had the key fob they couldn't copy me a new fob as it is the old soldier bridge type and i would cost me £200 for the new control module with 2 new fobs, he said that i either got hold of one from a breakers or buy a full new after market one that is cat 1 as the one i have isn't

Regard`s Stuart

Same happened here, only had the car a week and there is only one key fob. It got damaged. It is not quite crap what the BMW dealer is saying. It is easy to code a new key fob, if you have the old one. If you lose, damage, whatever the oonly key fob, you are buggered. so it is new alarm from BMW, or do as I did and take it to an independent who disable the Sigma alarm. This is possible cos all alarms before 96 where an after fit option (usually dealer fitted). So are not an integral part of the engine management system.
