740i 1998 clunking sound????

   I have a 1998 740i, ive got a wierd problem that started a few weeks back, i dont use it too often and only for short journeys, when started its fine, but after around 15 - 20 minutes of running you can hear like a "clunking" sound from under the car when driving, like something is loose, its as if you can feel it through the accelerator, only upto about 30mph, when on the motorway its fine, then when you come of the motorway it seems ok for about 5 minutes then the clunking starts again, very strange?? any ides people?
