E30 Cooling Problems

   I have just finished building a 327i (525e bottom end, 325 head) engine for my car and am in the process of running it in.

Everything is new on the engine and the head has been rpessure tested and has proven not to be cracked.  The problem I have is that on idle the coolant gauge sits between cool and centre - about 2mm to the right of the 1/4 mark.  Has anyone experienced this, and if so what was your solution??

I have heard that it could be the cooland sensor in the thermostat housing??
