i'm looking to wipe my hard drive and have been looking at getting windows professional. looking on ebay i can get a full unused xp pro with sp2 for a heck of a lot cheaper than an sp2. why is this??? surely i can download the sp2???

*edit - well if they are original I can get it cheaper for you.  No I am not going to give you a pirated copy.
I will ask my tech as well tomorrow if there is any difference between
Windows XP SP2 and updating a non SP2 to SP2 using the download. The
only difference I can imagine is it being a "cleaner" install. You know
the way windows never really updates properly...

you just update to sp2 it is not Piracy its all the bugs ms have sorted rolled into one big update.

Pre SP2 it was a hell of a lot easier to get around Microsoft's product activation/ anti-piracy measures. If you buy an SP1 copy on Ebay and install the official SP2 you may well find you have an unusable operating system after 28 days.
