I am looking for information/parts on modifying a 1600 engine for competition use. Particularily high compression pistons, camshaft and cylinder head.

Unless you are particularly attached to that block (serial numbers etc) I would source a 2 litre engine these are particularly cheep. I am sure somebody from the '02 register has an old one lying about. You can keep the 1600 on the road whilst you build the engine.
Otherwise http://www.bimmers.com/02/ is a good start. I recon you will save an arm and a leg if you pour through links from richard's web site (http://www.bmw2002.co.uk) |

I have just bought a 'cheap' '02 engine to rebuild over the winter.
The vendor could not be sure which car it came out of. Is there any way of telling if it is a 2 litre before I go and open it up? Nick |

Check the block number, this is the same as the chassis number in most cases, I am not sure what the exceptions are if any. This way you can tell what the engine came out of. I.e. automatic, tii etc.

so, from the chassis number we can discover the engine size and spec.. but who do I ask when I have found this number?

On a forum not so long ago there was a link to a Z3 site that would tell you the basic build data from a given chassis number (Any BM, not just Z3's)
Other than that try the dealer, or anyone with a copy of the ETK at home... let me know the number and i'll run it through the ETK if you like. I've got a link to the web site on my home PC, will let you know the www when i get home. Mark |

OK, i'm home now. My memory didn't serve me too well, it was a Z1 site that had the VIN number info...
