Data transfer stands at about 1Gb per day currently.
The new hosting a/c allowed for 10Gb per month when I had expected to be fine so the reality is far removed what I had planned.
Im not sure what is the cause - possibly just all the members uploads that are downloaded.
Anyhow I have purchased another 20GB per month of bandwidth at a cost of over €400 per annum

Welcome back Killian. Hope you had a good holiday. You'll probably need another once you catch up with everything.

People keep visiting the forum, start threads and post replies -
it's a real problem, slows the forum right down

Also note that BMWLand have sponsor subscriptions, so they can
afford to use a more expensive Service Provider with faster speeds.
This is a route the moderators have discussed and rejected for now.

bmwland is a more basic site?

the forum software on bmwland is more optimised?

the new host for the forum doesn't have as good a contention ratio as the old one?

so many different possibilities... but it's free, so you can't complain that much

Yup, I'm on a 2mb fatpipe and it's deffo slower than it used to be. Homepage is usually quick, login is ok, verification of login can take up to five minutes along with a slow return to forum catagories.

I've just increased from 2mb to 10mb and still noticed it's slowed down dramatically from what the site used to be like

Depends on the time of day you use the forum - I've noticed lunchtime/early afternoon seems slower that other times of the day.

Doing the test Stephen suggests, I get....

not as fast as the cars

Depends on content and pics etc..I have noticed a slow down on Win2K compared to XP, may be a micro$oft thing between O/S's also.

could be the connection between your isp and the route it takes to this site, is it always slow?

what kind of internet connection do you have?  broadband (adsl/cable), isdn, or dial up?

try clicking start.. then run... type "cmd" then press ok, a black window should appear, in that window type

ping www.bmwcarclubforum.co.uk > c:\pingtest.txt

and press enter, after a few seconds pause it should return to the prompt, close the window

check your c:\ drive for a file called "pingtest.txt", open it in Notepad and copy and paste its contents in your reply e.g.
