Hi folks

Coolant water seems to be vanishing from the rad on my E34 2.0L.  I'm topping it up daily now but there are no apparant leaks in the system, certainly no puddle of water under the car.  Had an over heating incident a few months back when the plastic vent valve beside the filler cap went awol on the motorway, and she blew all her water out of the subsequent hole!  I managed to limp her to some nearby services with the needle in the red.  She eventually cut out and refused to start again, travelling back home via AA relay.  The vanishing water trick seems to have stemmed from this event.

Anyone got any ideas on where the water is going??

Hmmm - had a similar issue with my 530 (12v) but never got round to fixing it in the end - although I was pretty sure it needed a new radiator

On a few occasions the temp went in to the red so it was time to put the heaters on full blast to get it down ! - Roasting !!! - rather me than the car !

As Drew says, quite possibly a cracked head from when it boiled. Should be easy enough to pick up a replacement head.

Thanks for the answers folks.  Looks like the head then   .  Oh well, I've got an intermittent tappy valve as well, so maybe a recon head can kill two birds with one stone!

I've just done a fuel consumption check across the last 1000 miles and got 29 mpg even allowing for the 12% error on speedo/odometer (according to sat nav).  I think thats pretty fine for a 11yr old with 160,000 on the clock!  So theres not to much wrong with the old girl and she probably deserves a fresh head.
