Hi Guys,

Well, the time has nearly come to start work on the old M6 (85 pre highline).
First job is to totally strip the inside, check for rust in the floor and bulkhead etc (non visible from the outside), restore the interior, sort out a couple of electrical gremlins etc, etc. Already started to collect required bits (can't believe the price of new door rubbers from BMW, oh well)

After that I will start with the exterior, stripping the trim and sorting out a couple of rust areas etc, one door will need replacing as rust has taken hold at the top, and roof area near sunroof will need looking at.

Eventually I will need a very good bodyshop to help with the roof, probably some welding and eventually re-paint of the car.

I live in Wiltshire near Swindon, so any recommendations in that area would be much appreciated.

Should keep me out of mischief for a while

Kevin

Incidentally, I'm originally from Swindon! Don't know any good bodyshops there though, sorry!

Well, car is now stripped of its interior and all seems to be fine.
Apart from having to fabricate a replacement for one of the metal drainage plugs which has seen better days there is no rot or holes and everything is rock solid.
New Jacking points have already been welded-in back in 98 and the work done is still fine. Bulkhead etc is in top condition.

I have taken up all the old bitumen sound proofing (that is the brown stuff you can see in the pics).

I have grounded out all the flash rust, left by water leakage which I am still to check where this is coming from, saturated with rust killer and will prime/paint the floor for extra protection.

At the same time I will also waxoil the Sills as I can now get to them and other areas of the cockpit.

Finally I will place new Acoustic matting (the good stuff) to replace the old bitumen matting

I have also stripped the boot and again all is fine, no holes, just some flash rust which again I will sort out.
Again acoustic matting will be added to the boot as well.

OK, new drainage plate fabricated and inserted, silicon added to give a water tight bond. Flooring now painted and sealed to prevent rusting.

Whilst waiting for this to dry I decided to very carefully remove the trim from the car as the chrome was looking very tired and I wanted to give it the shadowline look.

Chrome is cleaned, rubbed with lots of sand paper for good adhesion and painted in satin black, and then lacquered, using fan heaters to act as my very own baking system.

Also whilst trim is off all previously hidden bodywork of the car is cleaned, any little bits of surface rust removed/treated and painted, finally waxoil will be added before trim placed back on.

Rattus, i put a front jack point through on my six when putting the new wheels on last month. you say yours had had a new one welded in? can these be bought? I would rather buy a new one than fabricate something similar? Thanks.

When I checked the jack points out externally they seemed OE but I cannot confirm this is the case as this work was done whilst the car belonged to the previous owner. I did find the invoice for this work but it was done by a ferrari specialist not BMW. Probably just a very good match for the original and better?

You would need to check with BMW to see if they still supply such items?

I also had new jack points placed on my E28 and these were fabricated as I wanted something much tougher and to be honest I prefer it that way.

As a general rule, I do NOT jack my car up using the jacking points on any 80's BMW (even when jack points replaced), but use the car's box sections where its nice and strong, always carry a good bottle jack in the car as well.

this is the point where i realise i didnt read yourpost properly! I always use the box sections behind the sill at the front, and the read main beam suppost at the rear. The sill jack point is solid, i put the front jack box through, where it tore away at the furthest part from the sill. It looks to me like it had been damaged and not followed up after. Its a reasonably simple repair, and all the metal around it appears solid. I imagined bmw might have sold parts, much like you can gethold of arch's for cars, especially the rear arch.

If the metal around the jack points is still good then this should not be a very difficult (by that I mean costly) job to put right, and from the work you have done on your 335 I assume you will do it yourself?

Yes i willbe. I have seenlots of garages work on welding, and it seems unless you pay a fortune, any welding out of sight is either very poor and won't last, or over the top, and  burns everything around it. The only concern is that my car was waxoiled when it was new (can't remember what they call this again, but it cost alot), and i don't want this flashing off when i weld it. I will have a fire extinguisher ready. After that i will have bare metal in difficult to reach parts, i will use some cci to coat this by air. Thats the plan anyway, it rarely goes that well!

I've also got some rebuilding to do on the rear arches. I intend to build this up with weld, as it was just aggressive surface rust. this should then mean minimal filling, and the ground back surface will be an excellent keyfor the filler.

Front arches are shot, but i can save these as well. I have seen alot of chat about front wings on the forums,so i will document what i do for others to learn by (be it good or bad).

All I can say is that you are a better man than I.

Maybe if I need such work doing in the future I should get you to do it

You are right about the quality of work, on the E28 I did actually remove my own interior, the old underseal etc, and asked the guy who did the work to just weld in the fabriacted jack points so I can inspect it afterwards.

Good luck with BOTH cars

Well, I did find some rot in the end after removing much of the underside of the dash, 2 holes, both about the size of a 50 pence piece, near where the seams are, one on near side and one on off side, basically where the tyres directs most of its crap from the road.
Have ground/removed rusty metal and replaced with new, painted and protected. Rest of cabin's flooring now painted and protected, with fresh waxoil injected into the box sections and sills.

Have now started to sound proof the cabin using "extreme dynamat" which is not the cheapest but is very good and very light.

i did my e30 318 (m10) in dynamat, not the extemem stuff.i did the ceiling floor, doors the lot. it made the car quieter, but fot the cost i wish i had gone with bmw's idea, and used closed cell foam with it being lighter and  a better sound insulator. The extreme stuff is probably much better. I found the normal stuff was great at anti-vibration, but not too good at sound deadening, more vibration deadening.

Ok, Sound proofing now back in, boot cleaned and any flash rust sorted and painted, dynamat placed in boot.

Most of the exterior trim etc now removed in preparation for painting (eventually)

Removal of rear bumper etc reveals no rot, again just some flash rust that will be dealt with, will clean treat and re-waxoil etc.
Front bumper etc still to be removed, next job.

Also next job will be removal of headlining, cleaning of the rear sunroof drainage holes etc.

Rear electric windows now working again, one secondhand motor and one re-built window mechanism.

Areas of rust to be removed before painting shown in pics.
