Having read through, and replied to, the 'thread move' post and being senior mod on 2 sites myself, I can see this difficulty from both sides of the fence.

Something I requested my mods do is that when they move a post or a thread for any reason, minor or major, is send the poster a PM. Just to let that person know why the post/thread was moved and where it was moved to. I know it sounds a bit mushy to do that but it really does save on the antagonism and the members really do appreciate knowing why something has been done, whether its a simple case of posting in the wrong area of the site or whatever.

By sending that message, which takes but a couple of minutes to do, send the member concerned the right signals that you are not moving things for no apparent reason or picking on them etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you guys how to suck eggs here, just giving you something to consider doing that will make your duties (and blood pressures) easier.

I'll go back into my corner now.....

I think you make a fair point. The flipside is sometimes there are a large number of mod actions which need taken and PM'ing / eMailing everyone is pretty onerous e.g. at the mo there's a rash of folk posting in the wrong place and using HOOGE signatures and contacting everyone would take a wee while so we're working within the rules users accepted when signing up to the forum.

I agree Dunc, that it can be hard work sometimes. However on my sites I have just 2 other mods and how we manage it is by discussing in staff on a 'post/poster watch' thread about something that might be in the wrong place or of questionable content. We decide who will deal with the problem and that person deos so, right from moving or editing the post to sending a quick PM to that member explaining why he/she took the actions.

So far we have not had any bad feedback on the PM's, if anything we get a reply thanking us for taking the time to explain the problem and the member really does appreciate that, it cuts down on all of the antagonism in the long term. Members who have had things moved or edited also comment how it makes a nice change to know what they did/said wrong as generally on sites things go walkies and they are left confused and annoyed.

Rhys has seen my setup on the two sites. It might take a couple of minutes to do that PM, but the rewards from keeping the members in the loop really make that time worthwhile. Give it a try, what have you to lose?

In respect to the huge sigs, Killian, can you limit the size of upload using the software coding?

We have on ours, 20 lines max in depth for written sigs, a max image upload that is a clickable thumbnail, so the actual photo/image is huge but what you see is of a more reasonable size and can thus be enlarged when clicked on.

Also, some well placed sticky reminders just letting everyone know that you would appreciate a little more user restraint on posting sigs etc...perhaps with a reference to the site's TOS.

So far we have been very successful and have found that when people know the boundaries, they do generally keep within them.

A couple of days ago, we had a newby who posted his business links for advertising in his posts and sig, one of my mods picked it up, noted it in the watch thread and sent the member a PM asking to have the adverts removed as it was in breach of TOS rules. The member failed to do so initially, and that same mod then edited the post and removed the sig and sent a further PM. The member did contact staff and apologised. Job done and no antagonism.

Having 2 sites to look after isn't easy but we have a great little system running and it does cut down your workload if the stall is set out in advance and the software is setup to help you.

Sometimes coding could alleviate the issue. A lot of the time at the mo it's image dimensions rather than data size which is being exceeded. (That said we've had some comedy 250k+ avatars too!) As you've suggested in previous posts, the mods are discussing (a) amending the rules for more flexibility (b) coding options to alleviate the probs.

Hope my little suggestions haven't trodden on any toes, as that isn't my intentions, I just thought it might help calm things down a little.

Another idea is maybe getting a gallery software setup, so all those huge 'dial-up' beware photos and all the others can be posted in one place, perhaps divided into marques. That would save space on the main site and give everyone somewhere to see all the pics if the cars in one place too.

Again just an idea trying to help

Really, who cares? If someone gets the hump because a mod moves a post, they really need to go and visit thelifeshop.com.
Ciao,

I don't think toes have been treaded upon Ally. I often don't notify a member about the fact that I move a thread because it will still show up in the thread list of the otiginal forum page, e.g.
Moved: Coolant rising without being topped up!
I have no idea who moved the thread or why, but looking at the thread title I can presume it is a technical thread and was moved from the Scottish Region forum to a tech forum.
I assume other threads are moved for similar reasons.

As for the gallery - I had been developing one but following a discussion on the forum about how thieves can target a car I was under the impression that this was no longer required.

Couldn't agree more

If a post gets moved, it's for a reason. also if a post gets removed it's for a reason.

We send a short PM out of courtesy, and the members really appreciate that. Breaks down the 'holier than thou' feelings that some members can get when things are shifted for no apparent reason. Afterall, if they don't know what they did wrong, how are they supposed to avoid doing the exact same thing again in the future? Reasons to moves stuff is obvious to some, but never to all.

In relation to a gallery.

If people do as they are already doing, which is blanking registrations etc, then there is no security issue.

The gallery could be divided by region, for regional shows/meet-ups and by marque. Using software such as PhotoPost where the upload size is unlimited but the photos always show as a standard size and are resized automatically means that each photo can be seen regardless of pixel or dimension at the same uniform sized print that if clicked on will enlarge to original.

It would save the bandwidth on the main site in those threads with lots of sometimes enormous photos, which in turn would speed the site up and probably cost less too.

Both of my sites are PhotoPost galleries and they are very user friendly and even more importantly, admin friendly too, I admin on both of mine and moderate on the main sites.

I also have mine set up so that guests cannot access or see the photos, they have to join the main site first.
