I've picked up the E30 325 conv! (mentioned in last post). It's great, and I love it! It needs some bodywork doing on it, and I aim to restore it to as near as when it left the show room as poss, but I'm going to need to save some cash first before I send it to the body shop!

I think that mechanically its sound, but I'm no mechanic, but the engine has always had a slight tappety noise to it, and I haven't really thought alot about it. Its very quiet - it took me a few days to really notice it.

Is that normal of a car of that age? It's done 115k miles. I'm going to send it in to have a full service soon, so I'll see what they say, but I thought I'd ask incase it's normal, or incase its a sign of a big problem!!

Cheers

the tappets may need adjusting. get yourself a bentleys service manual for the e30 save a few quid and do the tappets yourself, a simple job that should put a smile on your face.

Cool cheers! Is that a job that a complete novice (me!) could takle with a book? I've never really touched any of my cars!

It's going in for a service at the end of the week so I'm going to get them to give it a once over to check for any major problems!

Its going to a company called Ajec Racing in Gloucester - I don't suppose anyone's haerd of them /  had any experiences of them? From what I've heard they're good.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Actually I have heard of them! In fact I used to have all my BMW's serviced by them, but since 'old' Dave (the previous owner) & (his wife) Cher left (and 'emigrated' to France) I haven't. Now I use Steve Rowley here in Cheltenham instead - an xBMW Dealer technician/mechanic.

"Young" Dave was still at Ajec the last time I spoke to them, and was good with BMW's.

The guy that now owns it was the previous owner of my E30 M3.

If you live nearer to Gloucester to Cheltenham then Ajec is worth a try - let me know how you get on.

Cats know your every thought.

But don't care.

Thats funny that you know them! I'm from Cheltenham - is that where you are? Nice motor by the way!

So...

The cars had a full service, and I've had the mechanic's verdict!

It's all good! It was a bit tappety (and still is a tiny bit). He adjusted the tappets (I didn'y feel brave enough to do it myself - although I'll definately be getting a bentleys service manual (cheers e30den!)), and said its perfectly fine and expected on a car that age, and nothing to worry about, which is great!

They gave it a good inspection, and only things were it needs a new suspension bush, one of the shock absorbers is leaking, and it needs a new altrnator belt. Its also due for a cam belt change. There's no major rust problems underneath to worry about. Generally a great report! I was very pleased!

So it means it's a keeper, and I can get on with the bodywork! (once my bank balance has recovered!)

I took it out for a good spin earlier with the roof down to celebrate!
