    Posted: 11-July-2006 at 22:33
Firstly guys, thanks for the advice you have given me recently with regard to purchasing a 540i E34.

I'll tell you about the one I just bought, and hopefully it will be a corker rather than a porker !!!!! Hehehehe !

Ok, here we go.

Its a late 94 model on an 'M' plate with 190k on the clock. BIIIG mileage.

Anyway, I checked the following when I had a good look over the car, Im no expert, but just picked up tips from you guys.

a) Idle is very smooth, both from cold and when hot.
Did not get the engine number, so not sure whether the block has been replaced with an Alusil one, or whether it's a Nikasil that has got lucky!

b) No oil in the coolant, coolant is clean, but not freshly replaced.

c) No white furring under the oil cap, or inside the rocker cover.

d) No knocks or rattles from the engine (was started from stone cold) and it sounded the same when warm.  No tappet rattle.

e) Let the engine warm up at idle, no fluctuation in temperature, also test drove car, and then left it idling for 10 mins, no change in temp.

f) Took it for a spin, brakes strong and consistent, stops in a straight line.

g) Engine is smooth and quiet, pulls nicely in 'A' (is that adaptive mode?) and is a monster in 'S' sport ? mode.  Pulls like a train all the way through the rev range, no hesitancy and no dead spots.

h) Exhaust does not appear to be leaking, could not hear any tell tail sounds.

g) The onboard computer works, no missing pixels, as do all the other gauges.  I think the service indicator underneath the speedo/rev counter, this had no lights.  Does it go to no lights when a service is needed, or is this faulty and do I need to look at it before the battery leaks onto the PCB and buggers up the other instruments.

h) The motor has factory BMW alloys (for the 540) these are the 5 spoke design.  Are these 16" and metric, or are they 'normal' sizes.

g) Gear changes are virtually undetectable in normal mode, it just wafts along, changes in 'S' mode are quick and as I would expect, but not juddery.  There is no whine at low/high speed either.

h) I tested all the electrics out and they worked fine, even the sometimes problematic rear windows all worked a treat.

g) There is no rust (or even a sign of rust) on the doors, wings, wheelarches or fuel filler.

h) The engine bay is clean and tidy, I checked the rad and hoses for corrosion or leakage, nothing found.  Also looked at the various pulleys and ancillaries, no oil leaks (other than the rocker).

j) it has traction control and ASC, tried these and the lights go on and off, but forgot to test them out! (not that I would know how with the ASC!)  Any light on ASC would be good!

k) Mot looks legit, the V5 is all in order and matches the vin on the car.

I've probably missed loads, but for a noob I think I did pretty well.

Bad Points
----------

No service history, zip, zing, nada.

Passenger side rocker gastket appears to be leaking a little on to the manifold (is this common ?).

Car pulls to the left and a little when left to it's own devices, I suspect this is lower arm bushes and more than 'tracking' that the seller said (hehehe)!

The interior is in reasonable condition for the milage, however, I'd like to swap the seats for black leather.  Will any E34 leather seats fit, or are they different ?

The owner backed into a post and has damaged the rear of the boot lid, this needs sorting, also under the number plate some rust has come through and lifted the paint.  This looks like it may have been scratched and rusted as a result of not being repaired.

I paid £1450 for it, and it has 10 months mot and some tax on it.

CORKER ???? OR PORKER ?????

Your comments would be appreciated.

Im going to get it serviced by an independant, im going to do the following, if you guys have anything you would check, let me know !

Oil
Plugs
Oil filter
Fuel Filter
Power steering fluid
Engine coolant
brake fluid
transmission fluid and feeder clean.

The engine, really does feel or sound, or look as if it has done nearly 200k, thats really weird.  Can I check with BMW what servicing has been done on it, and whether it has had a recall and engine swap ??

Well there you go !

Any advice would be appreciated !

Many thanks.  Jon

Right, now I need to join the club and come to a meet!

Jon

Sounds like you got one hell of a peachy motor, you lucky bugger!! Leather from any e34 will fit. Give BMW the VIN number and they'll be able to tell you if anything has been done to it. Enjoy your car!

Thanks for the reply e34silver530i, loads of views but only 1 reply ! Cmon guys, Im a noob !!!!

Anyway, I just picked it up and drove it home 80 miles............

And it did not miss a beat !!!

I did not check the sunroof (idiot) when I test drove it, as I have read that these can be a pain in the butt, tried it today................. and it works a treat !

The service indicator is down to one yellow peg and one red peg and both OIL SERVICE and INSPECTION are lit up.  is that right, I guess from the lack of lights it needs a service.

I still have an issue with the engine, the number is 50910840 from the V5, but the Nikasil WIKI says numbers should be in this format :

-----------------------------------------------------

The composition of the engine can be found by checking the serial number stamped into the engine block:

M60B30:

  • 1 725 970 - Nikasil
  • 1 741 212 - Nikasil
  • 1 745 871 - Alusil

M60B40:

  • 1 725 963 - Nikasil
  • 1 742 998 - Nikasil
  • 1 745 872 - Alusil
-----------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, mine idles sweet and there is no problem with power at the moment anyway!

Im thinking it is a replacement engine, or one from a lower milage motor, this one has done 197k.

It has done 1000 miles since the last mot, which is not a lot so thats ok by me!  (Previous MOT shows 1000 travelled to current MOT).

One thing I am a little worried about now.... when I parked it up, some smoke wafted out of the bonnet from where the oil I saw previously is getting onto the exhaust manifold and burning up.  Driving along you get none of this, as I guess the oil is pushed to the back of the engine and not splashing up on the rocker covers when you are at idle.

I hope this is a simple case of leaky rocker gasket (on the right bank as you stand in front of the car) and not something altogether more nasty.  What I can say is that the temp was rock solid all the way home, and at idle, the viscous fan comes in nicely and clutches out when the engine cools.  I would of thought I would see coolant loss if it was a cracked block or head gasket leaking, and also some performance loss.  Im seeing none of that, so I hope it's the rocker.

Fuel consupmtion was fine, it averaged 24.9 according to the computer (not that I believe anything it says!).  I dont know anything about the computer, so will need to download a handbook or something !! Any links ??

The steering is fine at high speed, but wavy davy at low speed, I suspect the bottom arm bushes and track rods are shot to bits, seems weird that these did not fail the mot which was 2 months ago, but the garage looks legit as does the mot cert.

Im going to speak to BMW tomorrow and ask them about the history, and have to say that at the moment Im very happy.

It's got 2 new P6's on the back, I guess they are not cheap, so maybe it has been looked after by the previous owner.

Looking for a four pipe exhaust conversion now, any ideas ?

Anyway how do I put pictures on here ? ok..

Check out these..

Or item number 250006883955

I guess I have posted the pics as asked !!!

And REALLY SORRY FOR THE LONG POST !!!!

Hehehehe, now off to join your members club!

Any meets coming up in the London area ? SE.

With ref to the oil getting out somewhere, just checked the oil and it is OVERFULL, its past the maximum, and just past the little blob on the end of the plastic!! (just before it turns to metal) so is this thing really full hence the rockers are getting a pasting from all that oil ??

The oil is a brown colour, not black, and not clear like it was recently changed.  Is that normal ? Is this oil sort of on the way to black ?

Gonna service it all this week anyways.

sounds like it has not been serviced for a wile if your getting it serviced see if the will flush the engine before putting in new oil. I put in Castrol gtx magnatec but thats your choise.

A quality oil  like castrol or duckams is better for higher millage cars

Yes i is a wee bit full just needs to be drained a bit but that will get done when serviced.

Go through the forms and you should come accross meets in your are

Enjoy your new car had mine 2 years and never regreted buying the old girl

Jon,

We maybe a bit far away for you but we always have a monthly meet at Thetford, you're most welcome to pitch up, we're a friendly bunch, if you keep an eye on the east anglia region, the essex boys are also trying to get more people for the essex meets on the A127 at the halfway house.

Welcome to the club by the way and to upload piccies you need to upload them to a photo hosting website, I use www.bmwmovies.net which is free to register to and then just copy and paste into the thread. HTH

I got the pics on that site Ian, thanks a lot for your help !

I've been out and washed it tonight, and got ye olde autoglym polish on it, lovely job.  Noted that I have a few bubbly bits on the grill surround (under the lights and the kidney bits mainly) so that needs replacing or a rub down and repaint.  Also got some bubbles on the lip of the bonnet, looks like stone chips that have not been fixed.  No visible rust/bubbling on any of the doors, even at the bottoms, so really chuffed.

Went to the BMW dealer today and bought £160 of stuff, oil, 2 x fuel filters, pollen filter, 4 bottles of 1.5L coolant (they said I would need that at 2:1 dilution).  They could not sell me trans fluid, they said that ATF is what I want, and get it from halfords.  They also said I would not be able to top the box up once emptied, as I need a special filler or something.

What oil would you recommend, as its soooo high milage.  Also any ideas where I can download a PDF of the handbook !

Well, so far, so good.  Its going in to the garage tomorrow to see why the steering is a 'wavy davy', I suspect bottom arm bushes, track rods etc.  Is the steering box expensive if it is that ?

Cheers !

Firstly - Welcome, secondly, sounds like you got a beaut there and a bit of a bargain, nice one!

Regarding the few niggles you have. Firstly, the smoke, sounds like your theory on the rocker cover leaking is spot on and this will no doubt be your problem. They are a pain to replace, but with patience and perseverence, it can be done. I did mine and never want to do them again but I did it and hopefully they'll last long after the cars gone (never!)

Your fuel consumption sounds fine and your trip computer is pretty accurate so it can be trusted! I get simliar readings to you so it's all good.

Regarding oil, if you want to take good care of her, please don't go to Halfrauds, check out the topic by oilman and ask him what he recommends. He runs opie oils and does top quality oils at reasonable prices and gives discount to club members. Also, he will tell you, in no way, shape or form is using flushing oil recommended. It uses chemicals that break down the oil in the engine and will never totally clear from the engine so when you fill with new oil, this will get ruined pretty quick. He recommends using fresh oil (the one you will use to fill and run the car with) top it to a safe level, run the car to temperature (take her for a 10 mile spin) then drain completely and refill with more fresh oil. Expensive I know but think of all that damage you could do with the flushing oil!  I used Fuchs supersyn SL 5W30 which is the correct spec oil for the M60 engine and is what BMW use from new so I believe! It cost me about £53 for 8 litres and was delivered to my door the next day FREE! fantastic service, can't praise them enough

Regarding the workshop manual, I have a pdf copy of the bentley manual, it's fantastic and is more explanitory and thorough than any haynes manual. If you PM me your email address, I'll email you a copy of it. If you hunt about on E-bay, I'm sure you'll find an owners manual but if there is anything you want to know, I'd be happy to look for you. (just don't ask me to type out the entire thing! lol)

Anymore help, just ask!

Regards

Mike

just a note on your auto tranny fluid its NOT normal atf its a lifetime oil and is only avaliable through bmw or most indy's you should have a green sticker on the bottom of your tranny ... this identify's the fluid, i had mine serviced at my indy new filter, gaskets etc and new fluid which was the most expensive part, but normal atf will ruin the box, apart from that i hope you enjoy yours as much as i do mine
