Hi everyone,

I'm looking at taking my '88 325i off the road for the winter and whilst it's not being used give the engine a full strip and rebuild possibly replacing some bits along the way. At the moment it's losing about 1.5Litres of coolant every 25-30 Miles, also there is a lot of Mayo under the oil cap so short of changing my name to Heinz i think i'm gonna have to do something with it. So i can assume at least some of this water is in the oil, however less than a year ago i had the head skimmed and all fixed after i drove it with no coolant (sensor not working).

Any one know what manual is detailed enough to complete this without loads of mechanical expertise on my part? (Haynes is useless for anything more than an oil change).

Cheers, Adam.

If the engine overheats, these engines are prone to cracking their cylinder heads. As you've had the top end gasket set done, I assume it could be this.

adam,

It sounds like a cracked head to me.  reconditioned ones are around £300.  Ideally you want to steer away from one that has been aluminium welded and try and get one that hasn't cracked in the first place.

good luck,

James

I suppose I can hope it's not to bad when I get it stripped down.

Any ideas for Manuals?

Thanx everyone.

Adam.

Try the Bentley manuals. They're american in origin and the terms they use but seem to cover a hell of a lot more than a Haynes. Not cheap though, I managed to get mine for £32, but they're usually a bit more.
