Personally I have always liked and had Magnex and Scorpion.

would a branded S/S exhaust (or non S/S sports exhaust if there is such a thing) be cheaper than a genuine replacement? i'm having exhaust trouble and have heard that BMW exhausts are expensive. only problem is i'm not a big fan of unnecessarily loud exhausts, though i could live with a nice purr.

Genuine ones are expensive but they are very well built and last a very long time.  My 97 328i is still on the original system and its showing no signs of falling apart any time soon!

You could go down the performance exhaust route which isn't always cheaper but at least its stainless steel and the likes of Magnex are not too loud.

Alternatively on the direct replacement market in the trade, I prefer to use 'Walker' exhausts over the likes of Timax and Bossal.  I have had Walker exhausts on a few cars in the past and they seem to be very built and last the longest and I have never had a headache with them.  Our customers also rate them as we get a lot of customers who experience quality problems with Bossal exhausts and rave about the Walker ones afterwards.  Take a look at http://www.walkerexhaust.com/products/mufflers.asp for more info and look into the 'sound fx' product.  I will admit though, we have not ordered any of the Sound FX exhausts in for our customers yet so I can't comment on how different the sound would be with one of those.

just now i have a scorpion dtm style back box on, but tell you the truth the kids sit in the back with hands over their ears

so something with a nice purr would be better suited.

i have a scorpion and to be honest i dont find it too bad, can be a little loud low gear low revs on throttle, longlife do custom jobs and you can have it as loud (or not) as you like, still pretty cheap have a look.

cheers
