Just got my car back today having had a clutch a short shift fitted which i was very excited about and nearly did not get home. About 5 miles from home, the car started to misfire and once backfired, and by the time i was a mile away the car was struggling to stay alive. It ticked over fine, but when anything above a moderate throttle was applied the engine spluttered and struggled. The problem seemed to happen quite quickly and was progressivly getting worse.  The car was not running hot, the water and oil seem fine so have ruled out engine or water proplems and think it must be either electrical or fuel related. My list for checking are as follows

Distibuter cap, rotor arm and plugs firstly,

Airflow meter

Fuel pump, fuel pump relays etc.

More exspensive painful items like ecu, crank cylinder head etc. (God i hope not).

I know it was nothing to do with the garage as only the above two items were worked on and due to the speed of the problem occouring my conclusion is that something has failed. If anybody has any suggestions it would be most apreciated as I want my 6 back ready for heckfield this weekend.

Thanks in advance

James

James,

Bet its fuel related.

Good luck m8 - hope its less painful than mine, I have dropped a piston and Hartge do not manufacture them anymore. Getting a set of HC pistons hopefully. Obviously I will not be making Heckfield, have a good day if  you get there and catch up later.

Sounds like fuel pump going. Check the electrical contacts first. If they are dirty or corroded, now's the time to clean them all. It may be as simple as this.

Only if you find oil in your coolant (like Muggins here) should you suspect a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head.

Spoke with some specialists today and they think it is a fueling issue. Cheers for the feedback chaps, we seem to be getting to the problem, but i think it may be a week before we have my car back on the road.  I have a long list to go through with my mechanic next week to try and diagnose first and then fix the problem. Will keep you posted as to what it is and how its gong both on my psyche and my wallet...

After much diagnosis, It has been decided that the airflow meter is at fault and so I will be ordering a new one tomorow, and be booking the car in for full service etc.

Whatever it is, it won't cost the £2300 that I've been charged for my cylinder head and other work!!!

You certainly have been hit hard with this one, but remember it is a labour of love and its worth it.

Thanks for the CD, the photos look great. Have to start getting my car shining again as i have been accepted as one of the feature cars for Donington. Last year all  the sixes bar one were rusty. Mine should compare very favourable. I know you didn't enjoy it last year, but if you are about i can meet you down there. Have to get there by 7:30am to clean polish and place inside the show. Dad will be comming with me so should speed up the cleaning process. Show starts at 10:30 although i am going to be stuck there all day.

Adrian tells me not to whinge about the money. "She will run like a dream", he says.

Donnington food will again be crap at rip-off prices. The family were not happy about this or the rip-off entrance fee.

The only interesting Six I saw last year in the hall was the 1987 Alpina version on the "Total BMW" stand. There were better kept Sixes sitting in the car park in the wind and rain outside....

Date of Donnington is likely to clash with next Heckfield meet and my birthday, so will not be going.
