The B7S Turbo 1981-82 The B7S Turbo was a special limited-edition model [based on the E12 5-series] introduced in the autumn of 1981. One of its purposes was certainly to offer Alpina customers something new and exciting while the company prepared a car based on the new E28 BMWs, which had been announced a few months earlier at the Munich Motor Show in June. Just sixty cars were built between November 1981 and May 1982, all of them left-hand drive models painted in Sapphire Blue metallic which Alpina had adopted as one ifs house colours and wearing gold Alpina side stripes with 'B7S Turbo' lettering on each rear wing. They were accompanied by a limited-edition B7S Turbo Coup'e, based on the 6 Series BMWs. Broadly speaking, the B7S Turbo was a re-engined B7 Turbo. This time, Alpina had used the big 3453cc BMW 6-cylinder engine as its starting-point and had added a turbocharger with additional modifications. The compression ratio was once again reduced from that of the standard engine (found in the BMW 635CSi and M535i). A Pierburg DL injection system with Hartig ignition replaced the factory-issue L-Jetronic injection. The turbocharger was once again provided with a variable boost control mounted on the centre console. At minimum boost, the engine promised 250PS, which rose to a massive 350PS on full boost. As usual, the engine was extraordinarily flexible, while Alpina had managed to minimise the characteristic turbo-charger lag in order to provide smoother power delivery." I think you'll find the "S" differentiated it from the standard B7 Turbo. B7 Turbo = 300 bhp B7S Turbo = 330bhp. But still LHD only, whichever one you had. |
