I reckon it's the same fault.  But the silicon will have set now, so be careful if you drag the interior roof skin down again.

i've had a second attempt at sealing the end cap with no success. i've dropped the headliner and i was going to give it one more go, having realised that because of access problems, i hadn't sealed the area completely.

I've had yet another complication. i parked the car facing uphill last night to avoid soaking my front carpets and this evening when i came along, the spare wheel well was under 2 inches of water. i have no idea where this water is coming from. when i first got the car, the spare wheel well had a fine healthy coating of surface rust over the paint on the inside. the well's skin had previous repairs, so i cleaned the whole area out and assumed that that was the end of that.

any help with this problem is greatly appreciated because with the long wet winter rolling in, i'm not too confident in this car.

have you tried cleaning the water channel's from your sunroof?

get a good length of strong wire and push it down each channel you could also pour water into the gutter part of the sunroof and see if it is escaping as it should, the gutter channel's come out just bellow the front door's and behind the rear bumper (well on my E30 they do )

on advice, i checked these when this problem came to light and i'm happy with them, they're flowing free.

i think i have it cracked though.

having messed around with the headliner partially down, i decided to take it down entirely for access. i didn't find it too hard to take it all down and put it back. i was worried about breaking clips and creating cabin creaks and rattles. ususally i'm all thumbs and cause more damage than i fix but it all came down like a jig saw.

i went to great lengths to make sure the riveted plate was fully sealed and then i discovered that the corners of the sunroof recess near the drainholes were rusted. the rubber seal on the roof has perished and constricted, opening up two rustholes at either front corner. when i poured water behind the rubber seal on the roof, water poured straight into the car.

i made sure the rivetplate area was sealed underneath, made sure the drainholes were working and ploughed silicone sealer into the underneath of the sunroof recess. tested, re-assembled and hey presto. cue 12 hours of rain and not a drop of water. result. for now anyway. the question is whether the silicone will win the war with the rust and i'm not hopeful. it's a question of time really.

i also found another leak at the top left of the windscreen and fixed it.

will add photo when i figure out how.
