I was wondering has anybody ever looked at this car, I had a look at it today and it would need a new backbox as its rusted through, a new rear windscreen and it has a rust spot undereath the lip of the boot. It has been there for a while, and obviously wont appeal to many people with that 4litre engine. Was'nt there a Nikasil issue with these engines?

That would be a cracking car to buy. If it needs work, the dealer should be doing it before it's sold. Or you could think about modifying it with an Eisenmann exhaust etc and see if the dealer would drop right down on price to get rid of it. If that car had of been for sale before my dad bought his 530d I would have got him to buy it instead.

The 4.4l V8 had an alusil block and should be OK, but I didn't think the 4.4 appeared until 1996 in the 840 so double check on the log book that it really a 4.4 alusil engine.

Great car to do motorway miles in, very very big car and very comfy but does not handle like a BMW coupe real should.
Also a very expensive car to run as parts are expensive and rare. Buy a lemon and you are doomed. |

That's correct. The M62 is Alusil and is not prone to the Nikasil issue. Indeed be careful as in early '96 the 840 still had the old Nikasil 4.0l V8 M60 engine |

Us M3, That car has been there at least a year. It is the old 4 litre v8 engine. Also, that car has had problems on several occasions, thats why the last guy got rid of it. Don't buy, hold out for a good one.

Even better buy a V12. They are a much better
engine than any of the V8's, a simple 2 valve unit that you can buy for Ł200 from any breakers with a 750i. The V8's have too many issues - Nikasil, head gaskets, oil pump bolts, coil packs, cam cover gasket leaks. The V12 for example uses two 325i E30 distributor caps and ordinary leads - cheap. The V12's do use two ECU's etc but apart from the early 750i's up until 1990-91 they're very reliable engines although the sump gasket can leak. The gearbox is a stock four speed auto shared with the 750i (again cheap secondhand). The V12 isn't much (if any) faster than a 4.4 840Ci but they sound nicer. I had an 840Ci a few years ago that I bought from BMW with a dealer warranty - and boy, it needed it. |
