my dad has run on flats on his '06 318d. he is very unimpressed with the firmness of the car in general (he got too used to passats) but i hear that the run on flats are a lot firmer still. is there a way he could put on 'normal' tyres without affecting the warranty?

I am not sure about the warranty, but I can't see it being a hughe issue.  We have had quite a few customers come in with the new 3 series which are fitted with Run Flat tyres, and they just change them over and then sell the Run Flats on elsewhere.

are they are pricey? you would have no choice but to sling a spare wheel loose into the boot though, wouldn't you?

A Run Flat variant of a tyre does cost a few £ more to buy over the same tyre tyre without RFT technology.  (Not all tyres have RFT variants either).

Some of our customers who don't require a lot of boot space just carry a spare space saver or spare alloy around in the boot whereas a small number opted to take a chance carrying a few cans of tyre weld around.  In my opinion the wise mans option is to get a space saver wheel for it, as that way you have a spare wheel in your time of need and the tyre weld may not work if the puncture/damage to the tyre is too severe.

I don't know the stud pattern for the latest 3 series off the top of my head with regards to what else is compatible, but I'd either ask BMW or a BMW breaker.  If the stud pattern is the same as the one on the E46 3 series then you can get a space saver from one of those from a breakers.............
