    Posted: 04-December-2006 at 08:24

Can anyone tell me what the fuel tank capacity is of the E39?

I'm sure I have read that it is 70 litres and elsewhere (i.e. Haynes Manual I think) that it is 78 litres in capacity.

I was on the yellow light low fuel level warning on Friday night and on Saturday morning I managed to fill it with over 68 litres of V power.

The needle was the lowest I have seen it when driving with the low fuel level warning light on.  I was that concerned that I didn't go to the petrol station that I normally use and went to one nearer.  Just as well if I only had just over 1 litre left.

Thanks

Andrew

70L seems about right but probably excludes the expansion space.  I brim mine (I know I probably shouldn't but the petrol generally doesn't stay in there too long!) and so probably squeeze in an extra 3 or 4 litres.  That would be reasonably consistent with the figures I calculate for consumption (or else the obc is massively underreading consumption - unlikely!).

The warning light on mine typically comes on at about 65 miles remaining which should equate to about 8 litres remaining in my case.

Thanks guys.

I brim mine also by filling it up to the neck so that I can see the fuel level when I pull the nozzle out. I get at least another litre to 1.5 in the tank after the nozzle first cuts out, but that is filling it up to the fuel cap.

My warning light came on when I had about 40 miles remaining which dropped alarmingly to 14 on Saturday morning when I was in first gear accelerating from cold!
