Hi All Can anyone advise on a good type of aerial I can install on my E30 BMW sedan. So far, I have replaced the stock motor driven one twice (both times, the cog stripped and the aerial would no longer go up), I tried the stiff aerial with a spring in the middle (this broke off on a small branch) and I have tried the manual telescopic aerial (which worked for about a month, before the joins that hold the telescopic bit together rusted off and it came off in my hand!!!) Not sure what else to try? Was thinking of the long, flexy wire type that just bends if something hits it? BB Edited by BeemaBoy |

The cognoscenti tend to choose a wire coathanger bent into a square.
This is especially useful on a beige capri. More seriously, I'd look for a bendy whip antenna (like those on the E36/E46 convertibles)... I bet someone makes one suitable. |

Hirschmann antenna's, not cheap but good quality, either electric or manual. Can't get cheaper than a wire coat hanger though.

The problem with the electric aerials is that the shaft gets gunged up over time and makes the motor work harder. Hirschman or Beru electric aerials should be fine, but you need to clean the aerial shaft every week. I use a small amount of WD40 and wipe clean.
The advantage of the traditional electric aerial is that it won't get vandalised by some scumbucket. While the M3 style aerial looks the biz, there is still a chance of it getting vandalised. |
