Hi folks,

I am searching a second car as above, I want a 740 around 94-96 in Aspen silver 18" multi's, comfort or contour's nor de-chromed, BUT!  I hear all sorts of stories regarding engine reliability with the V8 what is the crack, as I will be buying a car with a full MDSH but 100K+ miles. does anyone know of a good sound source of mechanical advice here?

I previously owned a 728i Sport a '99 in Glacier green but due to personal issues had to let her go. The finest car I have driven by a big big margin, so this time a hobby car with a bigger engine.  I would go 750 but need the short whelbase for my garage as the 28 fitted with 1" only to spare and made the PDC work overtime!

Del,

I don't know too much about it but I have always been told to steer clear of the 3.0 and 4.0 V8 (M62 I think). The cylinder bores were coated with Nikasil (a Nickel/Silicon preparation?), unfortunately, low suplphur fuel eroded the Nikasil and caused a number of cars to suffer from compression failure. As I understood it, BMW would change the engine FOC up to 80k miles. I believe that this may have affected the early 2.8's too.

Hope that helps.

It's the 4.0l engine that has the liner problems, not the later 4.4l M62....

If u do get a 4.0l car, check whether the block has been changed - many were under warranty - if not, but assuming it's okay anyway, make sure u only run it on low-sulphur fuel (e.g. Optimax)

There are many more thorough explanations of this problem... e.g. http://www.lestac.co.uk/bmw/nikasil.htm
