We have an E39 523i (Manual) which is a 2.5 litres. At about 70mph its revving at nearly 3000rpms. Is this correct? We also own a E36 323i Coupe Auto (also 2.5 litres) which revs at just under 2000rpms for the same speed.

Shouldnt the E39 be revving at the same being a big engine?

I'll check on the way home today when I get her out on the motorway but sounds about right.

I got 2800 rpms at 70mph in 5th gear.  Mines a 97 E39 523i Manual.

I would suspect the gear ratio on the 323 auto is different.
