I am having a few problems with some dash lights in my recently purchased 98R 323.The outside temp. display has gone dim(barely visible in sunshine),the lcd mileage, trip etc has thrown a wobbly and only half of it is showing(top half) and i would like to know if the switch to turn the lights on and off should light up when the lights are on(including front and rear fog light switches).

I know these are only minor problems, but they are spoiling an otherwise excellent driving, handling and luxurious vehicle.

I would be grateful for any advice(including costs) for rectifying these minor glitches...(I can get some of them done under warranty if necessary)..

Don't know about the comp. display, but the light switch and fog switches should be lit whether the lights are on or off(so you can find them in the dark.Clever eh?)

I read somewhere recently that if your dash starts to play up you have to replace the entire cluster. BMW also have to program this to your car and it can be pretty expensive.

The mileage/trip etc are lit by two small bulbs in the cluster-mine went on my 318iS. Gotta take the cluster out and change the bulb thats blown-not an easy job if the cars got a drivers airbag.

Hiya,

You'll doubtless find that replacing the entire dash is a cheaper option, but the reason you're experiencing theis grief is down to a battery that powers up the dash...next thing that will go will be your temp gauge and the your rev counter. The batteries have to be soldered into place and I found on my E30 ( similar set up) that even when not approaching a main dealer the cost of the job was daft. KMS in Wembley or Digbeth in brum supply recon units quite cheaply

Thanks for all the advice...seems as though it will have to be a warranty claim...might just give Sytner BMW a call to see how much they will try and rob me...

Got some of my light problems sorted...The digital outside temperature and light switch problems were sorted by a bmw main dealer...£56 to change some bulbs...

The service i got was first rate...They even cleaned my car for me,a very pleasant suprise...

I have been informed that I may need a new instrument cluster to cure the mileometer faults...£300+...not cheap, but then again,I'm not paying...
