Just got myself an E39 540i Sport, after searching for right car for about a year got one with every conceivable extra on it & its tops. Still working out all the gadgets etc but am confused about the official title of the car. Its a 540i Sport but the service book delivery page calls it a 540iA sport, Hence my question what does the A stand for? £50's worth of V power only filled her three quarters full which was worrying, Thought the E36 328 was thirsty!!!

Auto??

Fill up on my old 535 using normal unleaded used to come in £65-£70 and the mpg on the 328 is averaging 28.4 at minute, used to be circa 23.5 on the 535 if careful!

Still I'd go back to a V8 in an instant!

It's got 1600cc more capacity than your 328 so it is going to be quite a bit more thirsty

And remember the fuel tank may be a bit bigger - unsure whether the e39 carried on with the 80 litre fuel tank the e34's had!

70 litre tank. Too small for a V8 though. You'll be very friendly with the staff
in the petrol station.

I'm in the process of trying to find a nice 540i Sport Auto (A = Auto)myself.  Big problem is that up here in Scotland there are none.  It is worrying for me if you in West London took a year to find one when in and around London you have more population than the whole of Scotland, how long is it going to take me.  The stuff I have seen on fleabay looks a bit iffy and very cheap even at buy in now prices.

BMW handbook says 70 litre tank in the E39, Haynes say 78 litres and I have put in over 67 litres of V Power in my tank.  I must have been right down to virtually fumes!

Funny I put 67 ltrs in mine this morning and was thinking the same.

If your in no hurry then hold out for the car you want. 540 sounds really nice. A 530i 03' Mtech with only 15K mils came up last week.... I was tempted..... but a quick talk to my wife "fixed" me.

Wouldn't rule out a nice 530iA Sport with spec like the one you mentioned Mick.  It would be cheaper to run and with 231 bhp probably quick enough when considering my Vauxhall Senator had 204 bhp and it was fast, basically just raw power!

There is a reserve tank?  Is that the 8 litres difference then?

I put 69L into my one 2 days ago, with 9miles range on the OBC.

But I've had that to reading blank (once out of curiosity - not something I do regularly cos of dirt in the bottom of the tank)
