After the dissapointment of having my 850csi calipers sold under my nose, I have finally managed to acquire my brake calipers. It has taken me four weeks and 100 phonecalls to get hold of some brembo four pot calipers off a 1994/5 840csi. I soon will have a six that will have e39 braking characteristics. I can't wait.

On a second note, I already had purchased some 750 calipers and will now no longer need these so if any 6 series, e28 5 series or e30 m3 owners want a pair to significantly improve there braking. Please let me know.

I assume the price new is prohibitive?

The problem with buying 2nd hand is you don't know what you've got until you pull the pistons out.

Good luck!

A cry of anguish floats through the Surrey air as "Sohlman" discovers that the path to Nirvana is littered with broken parts and awkward moments.....

And I've still got to do another 900 miles before the cylinder head starts to bed itself in....

A good start to the day!

After much dissapointment The hard work has paid off and i have sourced some 840 (96N) 4 pot brembo calipers which have new discs and pads. This made my morning and they will arive on Monday.

However my day got worse.

I picked up my car after having a new airflow meter fitted to cure the poor running problem. And I have been doing lots of little jobs to get the car prepared for Donington where it is going to be displayed. The car has been off the road for about two weeks so that we can diagnose what has been goin wrong. Having thought the solution had been found it broke down on the way home. I had to call out the AA and get towed back to my parents house.

I still don't know why the car is running so badly, but i don't think i can get a fuel pump, crank sensors and ecu which are the other possible causes ordered and fitted before Sunday which means i can't go. Feck it .

If i want to get my car there i need a tow truck as at present you can drive it about 10 miles before it conks out.

Anyone wants to give me a lift in there tow truck....

Didn't think so.....

A highly deflated Sohlman can be found walking around Donington lost holding a picture of his car that should be on display.

Well, here's something you can try. Does the car run really rough before it dies? That may be a temperature sensor telling a warm engine that it's cold and chcuking loads of fuel in.
Or, does it just stop dead suddenly? It could be one of the two engine control relays. I can't remember where they are on an old 6 Series, but they are both together, one has five pins (numbered 87, 87 again, 86, 85 and 30.). The other has four pins, 87, 86, 85 and 30.
When the engine stops, does it have fuel? Remove the fuel hose on the injector rail, stick it in a cup to catch fuel and crank the engine. If it's pumping fuel out (like a horse pissing!), that's okay. If it isn't, suspect the four pin relay. Using a bit of wire, bridge pins 87 to 30. This will give the fuel pump permanent 12 volts and if the pump buzzes into life, the relay is shagged.
If the pump is working, might be the relay for the injectors. Take a spark plug out. Is it wet with fuel? If not, suspect the five pin relay. Connect pin number 87 to 30 to give the injectors 12 volt feed. If you hear a clicking sound from the injectors, you've just brought them to life and it should fire and run. Note that on this relay, 30 is for 12 volt feed, 85 is an earth, 86 is for the main harness and of the two '87' connectors, the one with two red and white wires is for the injectors.
As a 'get you going' measure, run the 12 volt feed to an ignition only 12 volt feed. Don't be scared of this, it's a common fault now and I'd bet this is what's going on.
Good luck matey!

Thanks for the advice and support, been on the phone and there are about four relays/cables that could be causing the problem. The thing is no one has any stock of them that they can get to me by tomorow and it's about £150 in parts.

Thanks for the detailed summary Andyboy. The car ran really rough before it died, backfired and flammed out of the exhaust. Then basically any throttle caused the car to cough and splutter. Then you can  start it up and it all seems fine. Think it will be fixed, but the costs are adding up with no real guarantee's. I hate having to be towed by the AA from 3 feet. Makes me feel sick and it's always miles away when it goes wrong.

You should also make sure that the electrical contacts are cleaned. If you've got contacts that look corroded or rusting, then use a needle file or very light sandpaper to clean it off.

Also, arm yourself with a switch cleaner spray like "Servisol", available from Maplin Electronics branches. I've always got a can in the Six just in case.

If you're unable to make it to Donnington, and are housebound, I offer to call in on my way back from Heckfield on Sunday, and have a look.

Have had my friend on the car all day trying to get it ready, and have been in conversation with my Local BMW dealer, Munich Legends and Bexley Motorworks, all of whome have diagnosed the same possibilities for the poor running. Either Fuel pump relays or pulse generators.

Coundn't get any new parts in time, but had an old six round my house and so ripped some parts off in an attempt to get everything going from advice from Munich Legends. Swapped the fuel relays both four and 5 pin units and took the pulse generators of the old car no problems. Removed one pulse generator off my car, but the other sheared off on removal and wedged itself in the gearbox bell housing. My friend tried for one hour to get it out, but coundn't get enough purchase due to the location right by the bulkhead.

So to cut a long story short all avenues used to get the car ready for Donington have been tried and the car is still not running so it will not be going. I however will although a little bit P***ed off that my car can't be displayed and enjoyed by others.

Well at least it mean i won't have to get up so early and i might be able to meet the Heckfield guys later in the day.  have to look at the positive don't i.

The car will be fixed next week and atleast i will be able to enjoy it.

Thanks for all the advice, It really does help. Just wasn't meant to be this time!
