on board computer

   My on board computer has gone dead.its a 8 button one.can i replace it wit any other ones or do i have to get da exact same one?saw a few second hand ones on ebay.would like to get one of them rather than paying big bucks to dealer.since they left me sitting this morning n wouldn't help me out wit a gasket cos they doing stock take n i was over 100miles away from home.stuck :(
