Hi all,

Bearing in mind that I have a right hand drive 1985 635CSi Auto can anyone identify a switch/knob that is hidden away in the glove box area (i.e. on the left hand.)

It consist of a goldish cloured metal body with a spindle coming down from the middle, which has a round black knob attached. The knob has a slightly serrated edge to it, for grip.

The knob is a bit loose on its spindle so I cannot tell if the spindle should be pulled down/pushed up as well as rotated.

If it helps, there are three wires connected to it Red, Black and White/Clear.

There is also a thin copper tube attached from the upper portion that leads away seemingly behind the centre panel/grill.

The knob rotates from lock to lock 3/4 of a turn.

It looks like some sort of thermo couple.
Where does the copper pipe go?
Is there an aftermarket electric cooling fan on your car?

Hi Nick,

The copper wire runs away to the right, it looks as though it goes behind the centre console (below the radio).

I've had the car since it was 18 months old (19K miles) and am not aware of any additions added to it.

Does it do anything?
stereo fader perhaps?
Its the thin copper pipe that makes me think it is a thermostat.
Does your car have retro fitted aircon?

  Will look into that but I doubt it as it would be a very impractical place to put it.

Looks aftermarket from the blue female spade connectors that look like there are plugged into it.

Its definitely aftermarket. I have owned 5 sixes and never had one with anything like that fitted.
If you let a BMW spares department have the chassis number, they should be able to print off a list of original equipment. That may help.
